Robert Schumann, who revered Johann Sebastian Bach, recommended that young pianists should make the two books of ‘The Well-Tempered Clavier’ their ‘daily bread’. The collection is indeed familiar to many from an early age but most performers (pianists, harpsichordists and even organists) only give it in concert and record it after ‘moulding’ that bread every day in the secrecy of their practice rooms. Musicians tackle ‘The Well-Tempered Clavier’ in the same way as actors play Shakespeare’s ‘Lear’ or singers perform Schubert’s ‘Winterreise’, once they have reached the appropriate age.

The composer (Johann Gottfried) Carl Loewe is familiar to music lovers of the 20th and 21st centuries above all as the writer of important ballad scores, of which Edward, Erlkonig, Herr Oluf, and Archibald Douglas are well-known examples. His songs Die Uhr or Heinrich der Vogler were or are popular hits, especially in a bygone heyday of salon music and educated bourgeois culture. Loewe wrote more than 400 songs. But the same Carl Loewe also write six operas, two symphonies and two piano concertos as well as a total of 17 sacred and secular oratorios, all of which have fallen into oblivion. With the present oratorio, the Arcix Vocalisten, led by Thomas Gropper, are vehemently opposed to oblivion.

‘I find myself increasingly occupied with matters of the human soul, its sublimation and spiritual abyss. Certainly my opera The Ocean Betrayed betrays this preoccupation. This music has been to Hades and back, with Monteverdi and myself. ‘Hans-Werner Henze based the story for Das verratene Meer (‘The Sea Betrayed‘) on Japanese writer Yuko Mishima‘s 1963 novel, Gogo no Eiko (‘The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea‘). The book offers an unsettling scenario' in which the struggle for normality is doomed to failure‘. A young widow, Fusako, falls for a merchant navy officer, Ryuji, creating tension with her son, Noboru, who belongs to a violent gang that will exact revenge on the widow‘s lover. Through symphonic interludes, the ‘angry, betrayed sea‘ becomes the drama‘s witness and its narrative voice in Henze‘s painfully dark and brutal opera.

One of the rare recordings of these colorful, intimate and powerful songs, Das stille Leuchten (composed 1946) is comprised of two separate volumes: Geheimnis und Gleichnis (Secrets and Similitudes) and Berg und See (Mountains and Lakes) by Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck (1886-1957) to evocative texts by Conrad Ferdinand Meyer (1825-1898).Captured in searing and colorful detail, the variety and sprawling artistic landscape of this under appreciated composer comes into vivid focus through these insightful and meticulous interpretations by two burnished and intelligent artists.

The shipwreck of the "Medusa" was a symbolic testimony for many artists: for the painter Théodore Géricault, who captured the rescue of a handful of survivors on a monumental painting; for the writer Peter Weiss, who described his encounter with Géricault's painting in the novel "The Aesthetics of Resistance"; for the Austrian Franzobel, who published a "Medusa" novel in 2017; and for the composer Hans Werner Henze, who dramatized in an oratorio in 1967/68.

Théodore Géricault’s hugely imposing painting The Raft of the Medusa has stimulated imaginative responses from numerous artists ever since its creation in 1819, including composer Hans Werner Henze and his librettist Ernst Schnabel, who were inspired by Géricault to write a political oratorio on the painting’s tragic historical subject in 1967. Noted for its harsh-edged sounds, and melding a tender depiction of suffering with scathing irony and gripping dramaturgy, the political scuffles and rowdiness that broke out at its aborted premiere lifted the work into the canon of great classical music scandals.
