Memo is een Koerdisch jongetje dat samen met zijn moeder en zusje in Oost-Turkije woont. Zijn vader werkt in een Nederlandse havenstad, en wanneer ook in Memo's dorp oorlog dreigt, besluit de vader hen naar Nederland te halen. Zeer tegen de zin van Memo, die protesteert tegen de gedwongen verhuizing door niet meer te praten. Toch wordt hij vriendjes met boekenwurm Jeroen, op zijn manier ook een buitenstaander en de enige die accepteert dat Memo niet praat. Op een dag ziet Memo hoe Kemal, een Koerdische vriend, in elkaar wordt geslagen, en uit noodweer een van zijn belagers doodt. Sombogaart brengt actuele en politieke thema's op een ook voor kinderen begrijpelijke, meeslepende wijze onder de aandacht.

Dans l'Est de la Turquie, l'enfant Memo vit avec sa mère et sa petite sœur dans un village kurde. Berger et facteur lisant le courrier aux illettrés, il a trois passions : la flûte, un mouton noir (qu'il protège contre la cruauté de ses camarades) et le football. Son père travaille légalement en Hollande et aide ses compatriotes clandestins. Inquiet devant les violences turques contre les Kurdes, il décide d'organiser le départ des siens aux Pays-Bas. Memo vit mal cette décision. Il confie son mouton à un camarade, tente ensuite de s'échapper à l'aéroport, puis décide de ne plus jamais parler.
