Christopher Herrick - Bach: The Complete Organ Music (2002) (16 CDs Box Set)

Christopher Herrick - Bach: The Complete Organ Music (2002) (16 CDs Box Set)
EAC Rip | FLAC (Image+.cue, log) | 16 CDs, 19:34:45 min | Cover & Booklet (.pdf) | 4,65 Gb
Genre: Classical / Label: Hyperion Records

Seven different organs from the Swiss firm of Metzler carry the weight of the project, which is where Herrick's consistency begins. Other complete Bach collections use many and varied makes and locations in the hope of keeping our interest alive. Herrick's journey brings us a sound that has enough variety to show the Metzler's ability to bear a responsible approach to Bach despite their modern construction.

Melchior Franck is one of the most important composers of the early 17th century in German lands. The formidable ensemble Cantus Thuringia presents him here in world premiere recordings of 19 motets in a sensitive and virtuoso manner Melchior Franck was often mentioned as one of the most important composers of his time, alongside Praetorius, Schütz and Schein. Born around 1580, he became court conductor of Duke Johann Casimir von Sachsen-Coburg in 1602. Franck's "Geistliche Gesäng und Melodeyen" of 1608 occupies an important place in the history of biblical motets, the genre that predominated in sacred German music of the early Baroque period On this album 19 of 24 motets from this collection are collected, recorded by Cantus Thuringia & Capella under the direction of Christoph Dittmar.

The complete organ works by Walther! Johann Gottfried Walther (1684-1748, a near contemporary of Bach) spent the major part of his life as the organist of the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Weimar, where he also was teacher of the Duke of Weimar. He formed a close friendship with Johann Sebastian Bach, of whom he was a second cousin. Walthers organ music may be divided into a large corpus of Chorale settings, in which he followed the tradition of Bach, and the transcriptions of fashionable concertos by composers like Telemann, Albinoni, Torelli, Vivaldi, Gentili and many others.

The German composer Johann Gottlieb Naumann is mostly known for his operas. One of them, Gustav Wasa, which he composed in Sweden in 1786 and which he considered his best work, even became a Swedish national opera. This recording shows a lesser known aspect of Naumann's output: his sacred compositions. It contains three works: a large-scale cantata and two short pieces, which are much more modest in scoring and style.

Antonio Rosetti, who was almost always mentioned in the same breath as Mozart and Haydn by his contemporaries, composed over 40 symphonies, about six dozen solo concertos and chamber music and a considerable number of sacred vocal works. Ranked amongst his greatest achievements in the latter genre are the large-scale passion oratorio "Jesus in Gethsemane" and the "Hallelujah" cantata. Both show the virtuoso mastery of a whole array of musical techniques. Thanks to their melodic ingenuity, sophisticated harmony, a distinctive sense of proportion and the, as always, accomplished manipulation of orchestral tones, both of these late works are counted among Rosetti's most meaningful creations. There is no better conductor for this disc of Rosseti masterpieces than Johannes Moesus who is president of the International Rosetti Society.

Heinrich Schütz, in a way, stood as a bridge between the Renaissance and Bach. He infused his church music with a greater drama than previously heard in Germany by developing and transforming the Italian choral style he had learned in his studies with Gabrieli. Schütz's Psalmen Davids (1619) shows the influence of Gabrieli but also divulges his own unique voice. His melodic invention is in evidence in the Becker Psalter (1626), while his Geistliche Chor-Music (1648), a collection of motets, represents perhaps the greatest such assemblage from his century. A large number of his compositions went unpublished, most of those now lost. Schütz was born in Köstritz (now Bad Köstritz) and raised in Weissenfels, where his father operated an inn.
