On this Album, the well-known Kika presenter painted Arkona as an "orchestra detective" to a young audience. In a radio play with the NDR Radiophilharmonie from Hanover, he undertook one of the most famous works of classical music: the Fifth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Pietro Mascagni (1863–1945) was one of those composers who were famous for a single work, the rest of their output remaining practically unknown. His opera Iris is based on a libretto by Luigi Illica, who also wrote the libretti for Puccini operas such as La Bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly.

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra performs Het pand der goden, a music drama by the Surinamese composer Johannes Nicolaas Helstone (1853-1927).

Ghostly choirs, wild desires, unwavering loyalty, a gruesome act of murder and the eternal victory of love that overcomes death: These are the thoroughly familiar ingredients of the libretto that Ethel Smyth wrote (in German) for her one-act play "Der Wald". The music, however, is anything but gruesome. Echoes of Robert Schumann, some striking reminiscences of Richard Wagner and, especially in the prologue, an unmistakable touch of Art Nouveau flickering carry the drama, which premiered at the Berlin Court Opera on April 9, 1902, was subsequently staged at the Royal Opera House in London and presented with triumphant success at the New York Met in March 1903. There were ovations and a veritable sea of flowers for the then 44-year-old Englishwoman, who was the first of her sex to conquer the classical temple of the Muses on Broadway with her work. Talent can do anything.

The Flying Dutchman was Wagner’s breakthrough opera. Though Wagner still employed independent arias and choruses, his operatic concept transcended earlier works such as Rienzi, which was influenced by French grand opera. The supernatural tale of the Dutchman, condemned to roam the seas unless redeemed by a wife who will be faithful to him unto death, inspired an ambitious work in which Wagner was able to unite his dramatic and musical vision with a powerful combined effect for the first time.

Brian Mulligan, ein Bariton, sang die Titelrolle in Richard Wagners Oper Der fliegende Holländer (WWV 63) in einer Aufnahme. Die Oper, die auf der Legende des verfluchten Kapitäns basiert, gilt als Wagners Durchbruch zu seinem eigenen musikalischen Stil und ist bis heute ein beliebtes Werk.
