After seeing "Round Midnight," I knew I had to buy the soundtrack, and if you too have seen the movie, you know what I mean. All the recordings on here were recorded live for the movie, which gives it a great intimate feeling. At the same time, the sound quality on this particular CD is surprisingly good.

Long before it became de rigeur to release multiple soundtracks for a single film, Columbia allowed Blue Note to release The Other Side of Round Midnight under Gordon's name. The additional album offers more music from the film, including Gordon's sole performance on soprano sax, "Tivoli" - incidentally the only track in the score not played by the same musicians seen in the film - and further outtakes that breathe the same heady atmosphere.

Tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon's 1961 Blue Note debut marks the first in a string of classic jazz albums that established Gordon's reputation as a leader. He is joined by a young Freddie Hubbard on trumpet along with the rhythm section of Horace Parlan on piano, George Tucker on bass and Al Harewood on drums. Includes "You've Changed", a staple of Gordon's live shows over the decades and "Society Red" which would reappear in the film "Round Midnight".

The title of this Blue Note set, Doin' Allright, fit perfectly at the time, for tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon was making the first of three successful comebacks. Largely neglected during the 1950s, Gordon's Blue Note recordings (of which this was the first) led to his rediscovery. The tenor is teamed with the young trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Horace Parlan, bassist George Tucker, and drummer Al Harewood for a strong set of music that is highlighted by "You've Changed" (which would become a permanent part of Gordon's repertoire), "Society Red" (a blues later used in the film Round Midnight), and "It's You or No One."

Elemental Music proudly presents DEXTER GORDON QUARTET -ESPACE CARDIN 1977, a complete previously unissued live performance by the great saxophonist, digitally remastered from the original master tapes at the INA Archives. Recorded in Paris on September 25, 1977, this concert marks the only recorded encounter of Gordon with the brilliant pianist Al Haig, who had been for years the pianist in Charlie Parker's Quintet. The group is completed by French bassist Pierre Michelot and the superb Kenny Clarke on drums. The program includes an outstanding reading of "Body and Soul", and Dexter's only known version of Sonny Rollins' "Oleo". A trio version of Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight" showcasing the rhythm section led by Al Haig, recorded during the same performance, has been added as a bonus.

The acclaim that met Dexter Gordon when he returned to the United States after 14 years in Europe was completely unexpected. Not only did the jazz critics praise the great tenor but there were literally lines of young fans waiting to see his performances. This double CD, recorded during his historic first American tour, improved on the original double LP with the inclusion of previously unreleased versions of "Fried Bananas" and "Body and Soul." Gordon – in a quintet with trumpeter Woody Shaw, pianist Ronnie Mathews, bassist Stafford James, and drummer Louis Hayes – frequently sounds exuberant on these lengthy performances; eight of the ten songs are at least 11 minutes long. The excitement of the period can definitely be felt in this excellent music.

Dexter Gordon (February 27, 1923 – April 25, 1990) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. He was one of the first players of the instrument in the bebop idiom of musicians such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Bud Powell. Gordon's height was 6 feet 6 inches (198 cm), so he was also known as "Long Tall Dexter" and "Sophisticated Giant". His studio and performance career spanned over 40 years.

“This pan European tour with Dexter Gordon moves backwards in time from 1973 to 1965. What is striking here
is that through three rhythm sections in three cities over eight years with varied repertoire, the force of Dexter’s
musical personality gives this entire set an uncanny cohesion.”
