Hot Jazz on Blue Note is a four-disc, 72-song box set that boasts a cross-section of classic traditional jazz and jump blues from the Blue Note vaults. All of the material on the set is from the '40s, when the label was just beginning to establish themselves as a force in jazz. Among the leaders on the set include George Lewis, Sidney Bechet, Meade Lux Lewis and Albert Nicholas, while Charlie Christian, Ray Conniff, Red Norvo and many others are sidemen. Though it's not designed to appeal to purists, several of the tracks on the set have not been released on compact disc before, so hardcore collectors will find much of this set intriguing. However, Hot Jazz on Blue Note is targeted at the novice, who will find this sampler both educational and entertaining.

Recognized as the first rock opera, The Who’s "Tommy" set a new standard for the concept album in rock. About a deaf, dumb and blind pinball master, the double album (which featured the monster hit "Pinball Wizard") shot The Who to superstardom. As well as being hugely successful, the album also established the band as one of the most ambitious and innovative groups of the 1960s and 70s. This hi-res release adds a new dimension to the rock masterpiece, making for an essential re-experience.

It’s hard to believe The Who did not officially release this recording. In spite of all the technical glitches and other problems which the 1973 Quadrophenia tour is known for, The Who were in fine form on this particular night in Philadelphia. The whole band is amazing. In particular, John Entwistle’s bass and Keith Moon’s drumming are spot on brilliant. Considering this is an unofficial release, I would rate the sound quality as above average. This is The Who at their absolute best. Highly recommended for Wholigans.

Mehul was the most famous French composer in the time of the Revolution, Consulate and Empire, praised by Mendelssohn, Schumann, Weber and Berlioz, and lauded to the skies by Cherubini, who called Stratonice (the fifth of his 35 operas) “a work of genius, Mehul’s masterpiece”. Nor was he alone in this opinion, since in Paris alone it was performed over 200 times during the next quarter of a century, though withdrawn during the Reign of Terror because of the finale praising royal compassion. The opera – comique only in the sense of including spoken dialogue – is serious in tone (as the grave and dramatic overture presages): based on a classical subject, it tells how Seleucus, King of Syria, engages a doctor (Erasistrate) to cure his son Antiochus’s suicidal depression, which is in fact caused by his love for his father’s fiancee, the Princess Stratonice.

This double CD is pretty similar in sound and content to the expanded Live at Leeds album, except there's much more from Tommy, and a few semi-obscure numbers like "I Don't Even Know Myself," "Water," and "Naked Eye." Hardcore Who fanatics seem to prefer Live at Leeds, which was recorded only a few months before this material. That viewpoint is understandable: the performances are sharper on Leeds, and if you're not a big-league fan, that single-disc set is a more economical survey of the band in concert during this era. If you do like the Who a lot, though, Isle of Wight is worth having. The sound and performances are decent, although be aware that the band's on-stage version of Tommy omits some decent songs from the opera, such as "Sensation" and "Underture."
