“Do you feel what I feel too?” Brijean Murphy floats the question at the start of Feelings, the full-length Ghostly International debut from Brijean, her collaborative project with Doug Stuart. Guided by a lush mix of charismatic keyboard chords, grooving bass lines, and radiant bongo-driven rhythms, the “Day Dreaming” lyric doubles as an invitation and a statement of intention.

The Sir Douglas Quintet may have began life as an admirably nervy attempt by Doug Sahm and producer Huey P. Meaux to crash the Top 40 with a band of Texas rock & rollers during the height of the British Invasion, but Sahm's wide-ranging musical tastes would move in a single direction for only so long. With time, the enthusiastic Tex-Mex garage rock of the early Sir Doug sides took on strong blues, country, and norteño influences as their career wore on into the mid-'70s, when Sahm retired the band's moniker.

This is a reissue of an original album on Doug Dobell's legendary 77 label, based at the famous Charing Cross Road Record Shop. Albert Nicholas was a favourite of Doug and John Jack, Cadillac founder, and one of the great jazz originators - he played with Jelly Roll Morton and others before settling in Europe.

"Newk's Time" is Sonny Rollins' third album for Blue Note Records and was released in March 1959. This lesser-known album contains some great renditions of tunes by Miles Davis ("Tune Up"), Kenny Dorham ("Asiatic Raes"), and a couple Tin Pan Alley song interpretations. For fans of hard bop, and especially Sonny Rollins, this album is a 'must listen'.

"Candy" was recorded by Lee Morgan in 1958 and was produced by Alfred Lion. Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ, the album features performances by Morgan, Sonny Clark, Doug Watkins and Art Taylor.

Altoist Jackie McLean's second session as a leader is reissued on this SACD. The music that he makes with trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Elmo Hope, bassist Doug Watkins and drummer Art Taylor is essentially hard bop with fairly simple (or in some cases nonexistent) melody statements preceding two romps through the "I Got Rhythm" chord changes, a pair of blues, a thinly disguised "Embraceable You" and a straightforward version of "A Foggy Day". Enjoyable if not really essential music from the up-and-coming altoist.

The military reference in this record's title is right on the mark. For over a quarter of a century, Steve Fidyk has held down the drum chair in the U.S. Army Blues (part of the United States Army Band "Pershing's Own"), an 18-piece ensemble that has performed America's original art form in a variety of venues throughout the U.S. and around the world. Like any great jazz trapster, Fidyk plays the role of commander in chief which is not to say that Allied Forces is a drum centric record. And speaking of commanders, check out the aphorism by General George S. Patton printed inside of the disc's booklet, amid the backdrop of marching American troops.

Trombonist David Gibson is clearly a man on a mission with "Inner Agent, his fourth album for Posi-Tone. Gibson searches the voices within himself to discover his bliss and shows a renewed sense of purpose. The album features a diverse cornucopia of supporting talent: Freddie Hendrix, Theo Hill, Alexander Claffy, Kush Abadey, Doug Webb, and Caleb Curtis. While the session showcases an exciting program of new compositions and arrangements as a swinging affair firmly grounded in the tradition, Gibson continues to reach ever higher for the blue skies of a brighter tomorrow. Serious enthusiasts and casual listeners will certainly agree that David Gibson's new album succeeds in delivering a compelling and engaging message that speaks directly to everyone s own "Inner Agent."
