Although the music of Norah Jones continues to blend pop, soul, folk, and country with a seasoning of jazz, her third album for Blue Note is the first where she's written (or collaborated on) all the material. Beneath the smooth surface lie darker strains on the album-opening "Wish I Could" (about a boyfriend lost to war), intimations of mortality in "The Sun Doesn't Like You," and the post-election horrors of "My Dear Country." The last seems to channel the inspiration of Brecht/Weill, while the equally bleak "Sinkin' Soon" is set to a jaunty Dixieland rag. Throughout, Jones's vocal intimacy and melodic warmth remain as disarmingly understated as ever. The soulful "Thinking of You," the countryish "Wake Me Up," and the syncopated "Be My Somebody" reflect the captivating style of her previous work. Although too much in the same midtempo mode becomes a dreamy lull, cut by cut, Jones's voice is irresistible.

Crossover Progressive | Country: Netherlands | Label: FREIA Music ‎– THOR 46

This is the second album from Tumbletown, a band made up of some musicians I am sure that many progheads will be familiar with. I remember Egdon Heath from their second album, 1991's 'The Killing Silence, and guitarist/bassist Aldo Adema was involved with that band for many years while keyboard player Erik Laan is from the mighty Silhouette and singer/guitarist Han Uil was with Aldo in Seven Day Hunt. The line-up is completed by drummer Arjan Laan. Musically this is crossover prog, and I can't work out if I keep being reminded of Roxy Music during 'Avalon' due to their classic song of the same name, of if there really are similarities during the chorus. The rest of the time they are nothing like Roxy, as they move through many different styles of progressive music from prog metal through symphonic and others, but always melodic and interesting.

This month it’s time for a change of mood for our album of the month – a break from the rocking riffs, pounding bass lines and crashing cymbals that characterise the endless flow of new rock releases. Bonafide’s charismatic front man, Pontus Snibb, is in the same mood for February, as his Wreck of Blues project delivers its second studio album ‘Too Late To Die Young.’

When Van Morrison's double-length It's Too Late to Stop Now was released in 1974, it was an anomaly. Compiled from eight nights on his 1973 tour with his 11-piece Caledonia Soul Orchestra, it appeared months prior to Hard Nose the Highway. Contrary to standard industry practice of the time, its contents weren't doctored in the studio afterwards: There were no added overdubs or masked flubs. Some critics took issue with its sound – claiming the band, particularly the horns, were too thin – but there was no debate about the performances. It remains revered as one of the greatest concert recordings ever.

On a winter's night in July 2012, Kathy and Ralph Kelly received a phone call no parent should ever have to answer. It was the Emergency department of a Sydney hospital, telling them that their eldest son Thomas had been in an altercation and that they were to come at once. Thomas had been coward punched by a total stranger within two minutes of getting out of a taxi in Kings Cross, on his way to a private 18th birthday party of a friend. Two days after that first phone call Kathy and Ralph were told that their son had suffered catastrophic head injuries resulting in brain death. They were advised that there was no other option but to switch off his life support. He was 18 years old.
