Drei Groschen Oper

For decades the Bavarian State Opera has been showered in international awards. A declaration of love for an art form that is so often unjustly characterized as elitist and for the people who so passionately practice that art.

Columbus: Dramatic Cantata for Soloists, Male Choir, Mixed Choir, and Full Orchestra, Op. 11, which celebrated its premiere at the Graz Music Society Concert Hall on 4 December 1870, is an extraordinary work within Heinrich von Herzogenberg's oeuvre as a whole and differs greatly from many other compositions by him. After the successful premiere a review appeared in the Grazer Tagespost that is all the more interesting insofar as it was penned by Friedrich Hausegger, a member of the so-called 'progressive camp'.

Many years before Richard Strauss composed his opera on the subject of Salome and John the Baptist, Jules Massenet had explored the same relationship in Hérodiade. However, in Massenet’s opera it is the vengeful Hérodiade, Salomé’s mother, who demands John the Baptist’s head, not her naïve innocent daughter. The opera’s lyrical inwardness focuses on the characters’ most intimate feelings in a way that had not been heard before and was considered radical at the time.

Barthold Heinrich Brockes was an influential German poet who added reflective and descriptive poetry into the texture of his Passion. Among several musical settings, the most famous is the one by Handel. This acclaimed staged version transports Handel’s Brockes Passion into the opera house, widening the work’s historical narrative to embrace the creation of the world, bringing a message of human greed and destruction into direct contact with the present day. The Händelfestspielorchester Halle, on period instruments, is conducted by Michael Hofstetter.
