Is there any singer better suited to record an album of Buck Owens covers than Dwight Yoakam? Yoakam first came onto the country scene in the 1980s as the new face and voice of Bakersfield country, a subgenre Owens and Merle Haggard had put on the map. Yoakam not only sang the praises of Owens, he sang with the West Coast legend, and their duet on a cover of Owens' "Streets of Bakersfield" reached number one on the country charts in 1988, despite Yoakam's refusal to play by the rules of the Nashville-based industry…….

"Brighter days are up ahead," declares Dwight Yoakam on the title track of his new album Brighter Days (Via Records/Thirty Tigers), his first release of new original material in nine years. Written and recorded over the last three years, Brighter Days features 12 brand-new songs written/co-written by Yoakam, as well as two seemingly disparate covers of “Keep On The Sunny Side” by the Carter Family and “Bound Away” by Cake, artfully woven into the same body of work in the unmistakable style that could only be Dwight Yoakam. The infectious lead single “I Don’t Know How To Say Goodbye (Bang Bang Boom Boom),” was written by Yoakam specifically for a collaboration with self-proclaimed Dwight Yoakam superfan, Post Malone.

Twentysomething Dwight Yoakam was literally the new kid in country music when he stepped onto the Austin City Limits stage in October 1988. But even then, as he has ever since, he was doing things his own way. Dwight was born in a small Kentucky town and grew up listening to mountain and bluegrass music, and unlike most of the mainstream country-pop crooners of the eighties, he almost singlehandedly revived the rockabilly/honky tonk/hillbilly sound that was one of the cornerstones of country music’s formative years.
