Heinzi Boesel and Kurt Fellner are two Austrian health inspectors forced to work together, traveling through Austria. Over time a beautiful friendship evolves between the odd couple who couldn't stand each other initially; a friendship that even overcomes the boundaries of great tragedy.

Flint Lockwood thinks he's a genius. But none of the things he invented are things that make sense or are useful. However, he has the support of his mother but when she dies, he's left alone with his father who thinks he should give it up. When the community that he lives in, is in an economic crisis because their primary source of income a sardine cannery was shut down, Flint decides to try his latest invention, a machine that can turn water into food. But something goes wrong and the machine ends up in the atmosphere. Later it starts raining food. And so the shifty mayor tries to use this as a way to help their community. But when Flint sense something's wrong with the machine, the mayor convinces him to ignore it. But as Flint predict chaos ensues.

Gottlieb Dornhelm, son-in-law of the president of the Salzburg Festival may not be the first victim but he is certainly the most prominent person to have been found dead at the foot of the Mönchberg. Convinced her husband's death was murder, Konstanze, hires Brenner to get on the case. After all, shortly before his death, the deceased created quite a scandal by talking to the press about his education whilst under the tutelage of the archbishop at the boys' seminary. At first Brenner's preliminary investigations don't appear to add up and not long passes before he finds himself under investigation himself.
