"A Single Man", released in 1978, is the 12th studio album release for Elton John. It is the first album where Gary Osborne replaced Bernie Taupin as lyricist. It is also the only Elton John album to not have any tracks co-written by Bernie Taupin on the original cut. The album was released on 16 October 1978 by MCA in America, and by Rocket in the UK. Singles from the album were "Part-Time Love", October 1978; "Song for Guy", November 1978; and "Return to Paradise", 1979. "Song for Guy" was a near-global success, charting high everywhere except the US and Canada, where John's label, MCA Records, did not feel that it had hit potential. "A Single Man" was John's first album ever to be officially released in the former USSR. In the US, A Single Man was certified Gold in October 1978 and Platinum in November of the same year by the RIAA. Like with many of John's releases of the late-70s and the 1980s, it received generally mixed reviews from critics.

Elton John exploded like a supernova in the early 1970s, generating headlines and hits with ease. As "Your Song," "Rocket Man," "Crocodile Rock," "Daniel," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," and "Bennie and the Jets" – songs John wrote with his lifelong collaborator Bernie Taupin – climbed into the Top Ten on either side of the Atlantic, John was inescapable during the first half of the '70s, five years that turned out to be the first act in a remarkable career that kept him at the top of the charts for decades. He had a Billboard Top 40 hit single every year between 1970 and 1996, a sign that he knew how to both change with the times and mold the times to fit him. John's earliest records were part of the moody, introspective post-'60s singer/songwriter movement, but once he had a hit with "Your Song," the pianist revealed he could also craft Beatles-like pop and pound out rockers with equal aplomb.

The album reached #1 in the US, the first of seven consecutive US number one albums for Elton John. In 2012, the album was ranked #359 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. It was certified Gold in July 1972 and Platinum in October 1995 by the RIAA. This was the final Elton John album on the Uni label in the US and Canada before MCA consolidated all of its various labels under the MCA brand. This and John's earlier Uni albums were later reissued on MCA Records. Two singles were released worldwide from "Honky Château", - "Rocket Man" and "Honky Cat." A third single, "Hercules," was prepared for release, but this never materialised.

"The Complete Thom Bell Sessions" brings together the complete recording session by Elton John and producer Thom Bell onto one album. Released in 1989 by MCA Records, the album is composed of the material previously released in 1979 as well as the songs that were recorded at the original session but had then gone unreleased. Two of the "new" songs were co-written by John - "Nice and Slow" was co-written with Thom Bell and longtime writing partner Bernie Taupin, and "Shine on Through" with lyricist Gary Osborne. Because the recordings were shelved at the time, the latter was re-recorded and included on John's 1978 LP, "A Single Man".

Released in January, 1973 by DJM Records, it was John's 6th normal studio album release, and was his second straight #1 album in the US, yielding his first #1 single in both the US and Canada: "Crocodile Rock". "Daniel" was also a major hit from the album, giving him his second Canadian #1 single on the RPM Top Singles Chart and just missing the top slot south of the border, still reaching a successful #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and reaching #4 in the UK, one place higher than achieved by "Crocodile Rock".

"Madman Across the Water" is the 4th studio album by Elton John, released in 1971. This was the last album to feature John's regular touring band (Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson) on only a single song. Later band member, percussionist Ray Cooper, makes his first appearance with this album. As with all John songs during this period, the lyrics were penned by his writing partner, Bernie Taupin. This was the last album to be recorded at London's Trident Studios, although subsequent albums would be remixed or overdubbed at Trident. Caleb Quaye and Roger Pope would not play with John again until Rock of the Westies in 1975, following Murray and Olsson's departure from the band. "Madman Across the Water" barely reached #41 on the UK Albums Chart, spending only two weeks there. It has been the lowest-charting album of his career to date. The album fared much better in North America, peaking at #8 on the US Billboard Top Pop Albums and placing at #10 on the year-end list of 1972.

"Rock Of The Westies" is the 10th studio album by English musician Elton John, released in October 1975. As with "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy", "Rock Of The Westies" debuted on the US Billboard 200 chart at #1, the only two albums at that time to have done so. It was also successful (albeit to a lesser extent) in the artist's home territory of the UK, where it reached #5 on the UK Albums Chart. Robert Christgau ranked it as #7 on his list of the best albums of 1975. The title is a play on the phrase "West of the Rockies", the album having been recorded at Caribou Ranch in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
