Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern play a pair of lovers on the run in David Lynch's surrealist road movie Wild At Heart. Cage's Sailor Ripley is a violent ex-convict with an Elvis Presley fixation who falls in love with Dern's Lula Pace Fortune, the daughter of a rich, but mentally unstable, Southern belle named Marietta (Diane Ladd, Dern's real-life mother). Just after Sailor is released from prison, where he was jailed for brutally killing one of Marietta's thugs, he and Lula take off on a wild cross-country trip, pursued by his parole officer, her mother, criminals, bounty hunters, and detectives. Along the way, Sailor and Lula have a lot of sex, share their pasts, share their respective obsessions for Elvis and The Wizard of Oz, and meet a lot of bizarre characters, including a seedy ex-marine (Willem Dafoe) who persuades Sailor to participate in a bank robbery.

Many would give anything to see a live Elvis Presley. In a sense Grumanu Byron (Jonathon Shek) lucky: on the road from nowhere to nowhere Byron Groom takes a companion in a pink jacket. Companion named Elvis (Harvey Keitel), he returned to us within 20 years after death, and hurries home to Graceland estate in order to get to the anniversary of the King. Byron all the way, are scratching their heads, who before him: a little worn, but without a doubt, a living legend, reincarnation, slicker or a fan? Later added and Marilyn, but that even though everything is not meant, but money for participating in the show… Anyone would be enough already and this, but it turns out, unexpected acquaintances are not yet over, making a trip Gruman in wonderful and unforgettable adventure.

Slow, elliptical, and for the most part understated, Yang's masterly account of growing up in Taiwan at the start of the '60s is as visually elegant as his own Taipei Story and The Terroriser, and as epic in scope as Hou Hsiao Hsien's City of Sadness (which Yang produced). On the surface, it's about one boy's involvement in gang rivalry and violence (on which level, it's often a little obscure, so numerous are the characters) and his experience of young love. On a deeper level, however, it's about a society in transition and in search of an identity, forever aware of its isolation from mainland China, and increasingly prey to Americanisation. The measured pace may be off-putting, but stay with it - the accumulated wealth of detail invests the unexpected final scenes with enormous, shocking power.
