Simon of the Desert is Luis Buñuel’s wicked and wild take on the life of devoted ascetic Saint Simeon Stylites, who waited atop a pillar surrounded by a barren landscape for six years, six months, and six days, in order to prove his devotion to God. Yet the devil, in the figure of the beautiful Silvia Pinal, huddles below, trying to tempt him down. A skeptic’s vision of human conviction, Bunuel’s short and sweet satire is one of the master filmmaker’s most renowned works of surrealism.

Simon's fame, influence and success began as part of duo Simon & Garfunkel, which was formed in 1964 with Art Garfunkel. The duo had many hits including The Sound of Silence, Mrs Robinson and Bridge over Troubled Water. Although they split up in 1970, Simon continued with a successful solo career. During his distinguished career he has received many honours and awards including 12 Grammys and in 2003 he was given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his work as half of the successful duo.

This movie deals with the difficult subject of "assisted suicide" (which is legal in Holland)

This is dealt with in a deeply emotional and yet pragmatic and realistic - and sometimes comical - manner. The difficult decisions which must be taken and the effects on the patient and all people around him are very realistically portrayed in this movie. An important contribution to the debate, imo.
