While Italian director Emilio Miraglia never rose to the heights of some of his fellow directors like Dario Argento or even Umberto Lenzi, he holds a special place in a many a genre fan's withered heart for a few of the six films he did direct: a crime film entitled Assassination starring the one and only Henry Silva, a Spaghetti Western starring Richard Harrison entitled Shoot, Joe, Shoot! and the two giallos that are in this set from No Shame Films, the infamous The Night Evelyn Came Out Of The Grave and the, until now, elusive The Red Queen Kills Seven Times. Both films prove to be solid thrillers with some great casts, plenty of style, and some cool murder set pieces as well.

The intellect of the Argentine musician Emilio Teubal is not the only facet of his musical personality to enjoy on his fine album Música Para Un Dragón Dormido (Music for a sleeping dragon). Mr. Teubal is also a fine storyteller with an unbridled imagination and playfulness that is reminiscent of his legendary countryman, the writer Jorge Luis Borges. Like the master littérateur, Mr. Teubal delves into the world of magical realism, which seems to be a universe where he spends much of his time as a composer of music. This gives his compositions great character, a sense of mystery and colourful playfulness that is rare in music today.

With his Violin Concerto Brahms was often accused of having embedded the solo violin too deeply within the orchestra. When looking at his two piano concertos, his intention seems to have been rather to write symphonic concerts as virtuoso solo pieces with orchestral accompaniment. “Because of the dialogues in the orchestra between violins and wind instruments and the accompanying figures of the solo violins, the concert seems to me rather like a piece of chamber music”, tells us Emilio Percan and decided to record the Violin Concerto without a conductor. The matter of instrumentation is crucial in this context.

The last decade or so has seen the blossoming of a new generation of vocal talents from Spain, many of whom have been expressing their art through early music. A leading figure in this artistic array has been the soprano Nuria Rial, a singer blessed with an unaffected declamatory style, sweet and yet intimate in its emotional charm. In recent years the career of Rial has seen her tackle with success music by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Haydn, as well as Pergolesi and much Italian seicento repertoire. This newly-prepared Glossa album turns the clock back to collect together recordings made by the fresh voice of the Catalonian soprano in the years immediately following her studies at the Musik-Akademie in Basel.
