Who better to perform a further instalment in the exploration of Spanish Baroque musical life on record than Emilio Moreno and El Concierto Español, whose latest Glossa project tackles the dramatic work Iphigenia en Tracia by one of the leading lights of the time, José de Nebra! Having recently also given us readings of popular musical comedies from the end of the 18th century (La Tirana contra Mambrú) and a royal marriage commemoration by Antonio Caldara when in Barcelona at the start of it (Il più bel nome), Moreno now looks to the middle of that century when Nebra was attracted to one of Euripides' Iphigenia stories for one of his mythological zarzuelas.

Chi era il cavaliere dei Rossomori e cosa erano i Rossomori? Per polemica, un industriale minerario continentale in Sardegna, finanziatore dei primi fascisti isolani, marchiò il neonato Partito sardo d’Azione con il nome di ‘partito dei rosso-mori’ fondendo le propensioni socialiste con i quattro mori della bandiera sarda. Da qui il titolo del libro di Giuseppe Fiori su Emilio Lussu. Era lui, infatti, il ‘cavaliere’ di quel movimento. Lo fu per dignità e destrezza intellettuale. È la sua vita a testimoniarlo: quattro medaglie in guerra; il carcere, il confino e la fuga da Lipari con Rosselli e Nitti; l’opera di ‘diplomazia clandestina’ svolta fra Spagna, Inghilterra, Francia e Stati Uniti. Emilio Lussu fu un politico e un intellettuale insolito nella storia italiana, un socialista ‘irregolare’ perché libertario, antiautonomista, svincolato dal Pci, eppure consapevole che solo la coesione tra le forze di sinistra avrebbe permesso di ‘costruire l’Italia’.

Emilio de’ Cavalieri (1550-1602) might be one of the most interesting figures of his time. A diplomat; choreographer; organist and composer; his few surviving compositions are groundbreaking; and place him at the forefront of musical development; especially in terms of his connection to the new stile rappresentativo and early opera. Cavalieri's Lamentations and Responsories are extremely innovative when compared to other settings from the time: the expressive setting of the dark biblical text combines old and new musical styles - beautiful and complex polyphonic sections alternating with highly expressive monodies and duets. Profeti della Quinta has been researching and performing Cavalieri’s Lamentations over the past ten years; and are extremely happy to finally share this recording of it.

With The Melancholic Bach, Emilio Moreno delves pensively and wistfully into the realms of the music that Bach might have written for the viola. This new Glossa album is in fact, by turns, a reflective but also an uplifting treat from beginning to end. Moreno, of course, is a violinist as well as a violist: with the former he has been directing his ensembles La Real Cámara and El Concierto Español, whilst with the latter instrument for many years he has been leading the violas of Orchestra of the 18th Century.
