The album starts off on a funky note with “Black Woman,” which definitely draws from 1970s era soul and funk, with the prominent wah-wah electric guitar. This is also the case in Dawn’s first single, “Daddy,” whose funk vibe is paired with percussion that sounds Latin in many of its rhythms. The electric guitar weaves in and out, bringing with it a burst of passion that goes hand and hand with Donovan’s passionate lyrics. Her vocals are full of emotion and soul, sounding both rebellious and mysterious as she sings “Ain’t no use tryin’ to set me free, I can see what you’re hiding from me.”

Highlights from two live performances given at 27 and 28/9/2001 with the top greek singer Giorgos Dalaras and the superb French coloratura soprano Emma Shapplin in the magisterial and imposing ancient Herodion Theater Under the Acropolis of Athens. The performances were kindly offered to support the efforts of the UN Refugee Agency. The awe of the place, the magic of the voices and the wonderful selection of the musical pieces create a really breathtaking result. Enjoy "Gloria" from Misa Criolla and the famous Shapplin's top hit "Spente Le Stelle" in an unforgettable interpretation.

Indie Pop, Singer-Songwriter | MP3 320 kbps | 39:50 min | ~103 Mb
Label: AWAL | Tracks: 11 | Rls.date: 2016

The Brisbane singer/songwriter’s second LP is all brave, incandescent mood music. Written with producer Pascal Gabriel (Kylie Minogue, Goldfrapp) in a French castle, Supercry combines tidy arrangements (pristine electronics, sharp live instrumentation) with Louise’s deeply honest lyrical turns and haunting vocals. While highly regarded in her country of origin thanks to her Independent Music Award-winning 2011 debut EP Full Hearts & Empty Rooms, Brisbane singer/songwriter Emma Louise was largely unknown in the rest of the world until a remix of her single "Jungle" by Berlin house maven Wankelmut became a surprise smash hit in Italy in 2013, propelling her to stardom in Europe.

On Emma Pollock’s confident third solo album she delves deep into her past, considering and expressing a multitude of emotions over 11 songs. That striking cover art is, in fact, a photo of Pollock’s father Guy Pollock, working the land near Blair Atholl, while ‘Harperfield’ is the name of the first house that he and her late mother Kathleen bought as a young married couple. Although In Search of Harperfield may not engage itself quite as directly with Pollock’s heritage as its title and cover art suggest - the lyrics here tend to be impressionistic rather than of a narrative bent - there’s a real sense of weight and history to these songs, directly stemming from Pollock’s contemplation of such themes. (That title’s no accident.)

During his years in Italy (1706-1710), it is believed that Handel may have written as many as 150 cantatas including a number of so-called cantate con stromenti for one or more solo voices plus additional instruments. The four cantatas on this disc feature the standard combination for such works: soprano, two violins and basso continuo. Thematically, they can be grouped in pairs: Notte placida e cheta (Calm and Placid Night) and Un’ alma innamorata (A Soul in Love) tell of unhappy love and contain elements from Classical mythology against a pastoral backdrop. By contrast, Figlio d’alte speranze (Son of High Hopes) and Agrippina condotta a morire (Agrippina Led to Her Death) tell tales of the use and abuse of power.

A gifted vocalist and prolific songwriter, Emma Frank’s previous releases have earned her rave reviews – including four stars from DownBeat for her 2018 release ‘Ocean Av’. The evolution continues with her fourth and most ambitious full-length recording to date ‘Come Back’. Says’ Frank “I'm interested in the intersection between folk song and contemporary jazz. In this collection of songs, we play with odd meters and tempo shifts, and the emotional interest lies partly in improvised orchestration, while staying true to a song form and narrative. Although we recorded with a typical jazz quartet - upright bass, grand piano, and drums - we also added layered guitar, synths, and strings to the arrangements.”

Charles Daniels enters into the exultant spirit of ‘Lobe den Herrn’, especially its exuberant final alleluia, and the three male voices bring an almost Italianate sweetness to ‘Jesu dulcis memoria’, one of several fine examples of Buxtehude’s fascination with the chaconne, as well as conveying all the darkness and pain of the richly-scored Passiontide meditation ‘An filius non est Dei’.
