Widely considered as one of the leading exponents in early music, Emma Kirkby is renowned for her purity of production, clarity of diction and extraordinary degree of vocal control. From this release it is obvious that Emma Kirkby's artistic vigour and sense of discovery are undiminished. Alongside her incomparable performances of well-loved works such as Bach's cantata Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen, she uses the esteem in which she is held by musicians and audiences alike to champion long-forgotten repertory such as William Hayes's The Passions. Emma is accompanied by Cantillation and the Orchestra of the Antipodes conducted by Antony Walker.

This album is particularly close to my heart because it contains music written especially for me; the composers have paid me the great compliment of writing with my playing in mind, in some cases collaborating closely with me, in others simply prese nting me with a finished work, and in all cases creating a distinctive, English piece which makes a worthwhile addition to the repertoire for solo clarinet with orchestra. These four composers have all also dared to write melodically whilst still managing to find new things to say. Does it take courage to write melodically? Well, yes, when you live in an age where art has to be forever stretching boundaries to be taken seriously. However English Fantasy contains music which I hope will entertain and move a contemporary audience whilst unapologetically rooting itself in the traditions of the past.

With her almost supernaturally clear and agile soprano, Emma Kirkby has enchanted audiences ever since she first appeared on the Early Music scene in the 1970s. And as the art of historically informed performance has become more and more widely appreciated, so has her style of singing, to the extent that she in 2007 was included in a listing of ‘the 20 greatest sopranos ever’ made by the BBC Music Magazine. Throughout her career, Emma Kirkby has made a large number of recordings of a wide range of music. Released on the occasion of her 60th birthday, the present collection celebrates her collaboration with BIS, which has resulted in ten discs to date.

When English soprano Emma Kirkby began her professional career in the mid-'70s, period performance practice was just beginning to make its way into the realm of vocal music. Kirkby, mentored by Jessica Cash, became a pioneer of period practice for Renaissance and Baroque vocal soloists. She studied classical literature at Oxford and took vocal lessons, but did not plan on becoming a singer. She joined the Taverner Choir in 1971, and a couple of years later, she began a long-lasting collaboration with the Consort of Musicke.

Unique. That is the way we can describe Emma Shapplin's "Etterna". The singer reflects her inner growth by delecting us with melodies that go far beyond imagination. Her style can only be compared to Sarah Brightman's "Eden" but Shapplin's voice is sweeter and much more dramatic. Pieces like "Leonora" and "La Silente Riva" reflect that wonderful fascination that Ms. Shapplin shows for barroque Italian, with all of it's dramatism and melancholy. In the the other hand "La Notte Etterna" and "Celtica" make the listener go through different stages of their inner soul, learning about their own way of approaching that elven and magical creature who sings.

This audio/video DVD contains 11 songs encoded as 5.1 and stereo – options accessible from the DVD menu, with interactive lyrics in both English and Italian, as well as Emma's video interview, and some other nice extras.

Here is the 2013 release by newcomer Emma. No, this is NOT Emma that also has some releases under that singular name. That is "Baby Spice" from The Spice Girls, this is entirely a different vocalist, and you can even say that this person "is" a vocalist. Unfortunately because it was issued on a small label based mainly through online sales and because she really had no media promotion and wide-spread exposure to the general public, the album 'Forward' virtually sank without a trace. The fate of Emma is still up in the air at this point, but this album of her wonderful vocals doing an exemplary program of Jazz Vocal standards along with a couple of originals should remain timeless.
