An acclaimed Italian jazz pianist, composer, and educator, Enrico Pieranunzi is known for his virtuosic, classical-influenced technique, nuanced sense of harmony, and elegantly restrained approach to modern post-bop jazz. Influenced heavily by Bill Evans, Pieranunzi emerged in the 1970s leading his own trio, and quickly established himself internationally as an in-demand sideman for such jazz giants as Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, and others. Along with performing, he is a dedicated teacher, having worked for many years as a full professor at the Conservatorio di Musica in Frosinone. Recognized as one of the foremost Italian jazz artists, he has garnered a handful of awards, including taking home the 1997 Django d'Or as Best European Jazz Musician and winning the 2014 German Echo Jazz Award as Best International Keyboard Artist. Pieranunzi remains a highly prolific artist, moving from trio albums like 2019's New Visions, to conceptual solo dates like 2020's Jackson Pollock-inspired Frame, to vibrant collaborations like 2021's After Glow with Bert Joris.

A Baroque West Side Story, Tancrède tells of the absolute but impossible love between two young people brought together by their passion but separated by their origins. We are in the time of the Crusades: Tancredi is the champion of the Frankish army, and Clorinda the passionaria of the Saracen troops.
In the labyrinth of sentiments, the magic wand of the sorcerer Isménor confuses the issues, luring the two heroes into the enchanted forest to better prepare their downfall. Dances, choruses and arias merge in a subtle, poetic mixture, magnified by the dialogues sung in the grand tradition of French prosody and the tragédie lyrique. With Tancrède, André Campra established himself as one of the great opera composers between Lully and Rameau.

This strong set documents the continuing and developing ties between Alexander and Harold Mabern; as the saxophonist unleashes his full-bodied, Coltrane-like tone on a set of originals and unlikely standards, Mabern's restless support unifies and galvanizes the rhythm section. At times, the pianist is a little too busy; there are passages in, for example, "There but for the Grace of…" where he might have laid out for a while, especially to give air to the segue between solos by Alexander and guest trumpeter Nicholas Payton. And repetitious left-hand comps during his solos nearly derail the band's sprightly 3/4 rendition of "A House Is Not a Home" and the choruses in the blazing "Something's Got to Give." Still, almost every detail throughout the rest of the album fits into a pattern of potent swing, even at the difficult medium-slow tempo taken on "This Girl's in Love With You" (the only track on the album that showcases the saxophonist exclusively as a soloist). Consistently assured improvisations from both Alexander and Payton provide the final touch necessary for the success of this session.
