Eric Rohmer

A film about Eric Rohmer, Paris, and the pleasures of cinephilia. Between the late 1950s and mid-2000s, legendary Nouvelle vague cinéaste Eric Rohmer made over twenty feature films, short films, and television documentaries on location in Paris. Rohmer in Paris explores his relationship with this most cinematic of cities. Combining elements of essay film, biographical documentary, speculative fiction, and mashup, Rohmer in Paris provides an unconventional tour of Rohmer's films, of modern Paris, and of how we engage with cinema.

The fifth of Eric Rohmer's "Six Moral Tales," Claire's Knee is a deliciously Rohmeresque story of sexual obsession. French diplomat Jerome (Jean-Claude Brialy), on a resort vacation, meets Claire (Laurence De Monaghan), the teen-aged daughter of a friend. Though engaged to be married, Jerome falls hopelessly in love – not with Claire, but with Claire's knee. Realizing that to be revealed as a fetishist would be ruinous for him, Jerome does not act upon his obsession. Eventually he gets to fulfill his yearnings by placing his hand upon Claire's knee, a gesture which she assumes is out of sympathy for a personal crisis she is going through. Originally released as Le Genou de Claire, this film was the recipient of the Prix Louis Delluc and the Prix Melies.

Karen discovers, after 10 years of marriage, she has left behind her dreams devoting herself to home chores and realizes it has been a mistake that cost her her youth. She decides then to separate and go in search of a life of its own. With her savings she rents a room in the center of Bogota and tries to get a job, but her age and inexperience makes it difficult. Karen will have to decide between returning to the stability of a relationship or facing life for herself.

Franois, a young student working nights as a postman, is in love with a slightly older woman, Anne. One day, he sees Anne's former lover, a pilot named Christian, leaving Anne's apartment in the morning. Despite Anne's explanation that Christian is now married to another woman and simply dropped by to talk, Franois becomes jealous. He starts spying on Christian in order to find out if his rival secretly sees Anne. Though Franois sees Christian meeting a different woman, he keeps following the pair. His pursuit leads him to a park where he meets up with a vivacious teenage girl named Lucie, who becomes curious about his motives and agrees to help him in his detection.
