Our Story chronicles the legendary Golden Gate Quartet's entire career from 1937-1989. While there's no argument that the earlier material represents the pinnacle of the early-20th century gospel vocal group scene (as well as a gold mine for DJs and electronic knob-twiddlers world-round), many of the newer recordings, though much safer and a little more generic than their predecessors, are quite good, resulting in a worthwhile and truly complete look at this peerless and mercurial spiritual collective.

'Mæstoso' is Italian for 'majestic'. 'Mæstoso' is also an Italian musical term used as a directive to play a passage of music in a stately, dignified, fashion. 'Mæstoso'is also the band formed by ex Barclay James Harvest maestro Wooly Wolstenholme, so expect references to his alma mater.

Sony Music's "Essential" series of limited-edition two-disc compilations of major artists has been well-assembled generally, and Ozzy Osbourne's increased celebrity following the success of the "reality" TV series The Osbournes justifies his inclusion, as does his string of multi-platinum albums dating back to 1980…

Born into a musical family in Wales in 1572, Thomas Tomkins became one of the most significant church musicians in England during the 17th century. In his mature years he shared his time between his duties as Choral Master at Worcester Cathedral and organist of the King's Chapel in London, and was regarded among the outstanding organists of his time. His madrigals were the most important in the English school of composition, and among his considerable output was included over 120 anthems, many of his outstanding works included in this disc of Tomkins' highlights.
