To the uninitiated Cracker might seem to be just another 90s alternative rock band. However, fans recognize that the band is much more than that, having skillfully explored a wide array of styles over nearly 35 years.Regrettably, when newcomers hear a Cracker song and wish to learn more about the band, they often start with algorithmic streaming playlists. These playlists are typically limited to the dozen or so tracks with the most streams. As a result, these playlists are dominated by a few albums from the early 1990s, the heyday of alternative rock radio. There are also a few “greatest hits” compilations for Cracker available, but these at best cover only the first third of the band’s 35-year career. Both of these sources overlook some of the band’s most critically acclaimed and fan-favorite work.

Adored alt-pop duo Cults release their fifth studio album To The Ghosts via Imperial. The NY-based duo compromised of multi-instrumentalists Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion, confidently and clearly perfect their vision with the cinematic new album. To the Ghosts was meticulously crafted; the earliest ideas dated back to the pandemic when they wrote music on weekdays from 10am-5pm with no deadlines or distractions. The album was written and recorded in Brian’s apartment; in 2022 they traveled to Los Angeles to collaborate with longtime producer and trusted creative confidant Shane Stoneback, because “nobody can read our minds like he can,” jests Madeline. To the Ghosts was co-produced by Cults and Shane Stoneback, mixed by John Congleton, and mastered by Heba Kadry NYC.

During 2020 I noticed that I was gravitating - as a listener - to more intimate, human-sounding music. Nick Drake. Joni Mitchell. I wanted to hear skin on guitar string, or a voice that sounded as clear and close as if that person were sitting right next to me. Looking back, it makes sense that I was seeking out that human touch in a time that was so robbed of it. Just like everybody, it was a hard time for me.
