Mr. Ozaki, a Japanese conglomerate businessman living in Los Angeles, hires a beautiful young double (Maria) to protect his real daughter (Lisa) from harm. When Maria is kidnapped by a professional crime organization for a $2 million ransom, her bodyguard, Luke Campbell, conceives a plan to rescue her.

In 1985, filmmaker Richard Linklater began a film screening society in Austin, Texas, that aimed to show classic art-house and experimental films to a budding community of cinephiles and filmmakers. The Austin Film Society raised enough money to fly in their first out-of-town invitee, visionary experimental filmmaker James Benning. Accepting the invitation, Benning met Linklater and immediately the two began to develop a personal and intellectual bond, which has lasted through the present.

Ils sont accueillis à Grenoble par Hélène, sa jeune et jolie femme, qui reste perplexe en écoutant le récit de leurs aventures passées. Ils l'entraînent malgré elle dans une folle équipée, au terme de laquelle Léo regagne Paris tandis que François, séduit par Hélène, part à sa recherche dans la montagne, prêt à commencer une nouvelle vie.

Pourtant elles sont identiques : toutes deux gauchères, aiment marcher les pieds nus, et le contact d'un anneau d'or sur leurs paupières. Et surtout, toutes deux ont une voix magnifique, sublime, un sens musical absolu, et la même malformation cardiaque difficilement détectable. L'une profitera des expériences et de la sagesse de l'autre sans le savoir. Comme si chaque fois que la première se blessait avec un objet la seconde évitait le contact de ce même objet. C'est une histoire d'amour, simple et émouvante. L'histoire d'une vie qui continue, quittant un être pour se perpétuer dans le corps et l'âme d'un autre être.
