Henryk Mikolaj Gorecki (1933–2010) achieved an international success in the mid-1990s, with his Symphony No. 3, “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs”. Since then, Gorecki’s name has been associated almost exclusively with this piece. However, his music is much more than this one brilliant work. Gorecki never looked at musical fashions, but consistently created his own sound universe. In the 1980s Gorecki, feeling misunderstood, stepped back from the official concert life in Poland. He reached out to simple folk and church melodies, making their choral arrangements.

The Orb virtually invented the electronic genre known as ambient house, resurrecting slower, more soulful rhythms and providing a soundtrack for early-morning ravers once the clubs closed their doors. Frontman Dr. Alex Paterson's formula was quite simple: he slowed down the rhythms of classic Chicago house and added synth work and effects inspired by '70s ambient pioneers Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream. To make the whole a bit more listenable – as opposed to danceable – obscure vocal samples were looped, usually providing a theme for tracks that lacked singing.

Artist, producer, writer, arranger, musician, and all-around first-class baloney-thrower Kim Fowley was the man on the scene in Hollywood, CA, during the mid- to late '60s. This collection compiles 20 tracks from Fowley's solo recordings, circa 1966-1969. The collection kicks off with the garage punker "Underground Lady" from 1966, which, Fowley is happy to point out, was released before the Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction" and the Music Machine's "Talk Talk." "The Trip" is a fascinating bit of drug-laced ephemera ("Summer's here kiddies/It's time to take a trip," Fowley leers in the intro) and one of the CD's highlights…

If you ignore Sorted! 40 Madchester Baggy Anthems' rather misleading title, then Ministry of Sound's two-disc set functions as a fun trip back to the late-'80s/early-'90s British music scene that includes a nice selection of Madchester, Brit-pop, trip-hop, dream pop, dance, and indie singles from the era. Though there's no way that the Cocteau Twins' "Iceblink Luck," Suede's "Animal Nitrate," or the Sugarcubes' "Hit" could be considered baggy – indeed, Suede's darkly glamorous version of Brit-pop was in some ways a direct response to some of Madchester's dippier, more excessive tendencies – these songs do add some contrast to baggy classics like Happy Mondays' "Step On," the Charlatans' "The Only One I Know," the Farm's "All Together Now," and Inspiral Carpets' "Dragging Me Down."

For this very special sliver jubilee gig, Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann will be joined on stage by the original cast of collaborators who helped create the magic on this influential, era-defining milestone, plus a special punk icon whose music heavily influenced The Orb. Simone Pedroni is a brilliant classical pianist and former Van Cliburn Award-Gold Medal winner, while John Williams is the most celebrated film composer of our time. Williams and Pedroni each transcribed about half of material on this album, which premieres Williams' own piano suites from 'Lincoln', and 'The Book Thief', plus Pedroni's own special transcriptions of music from 'Harry Potter', 'Star Wars', 'Schindler's List' and more. The album is a stunning and unique presentation of John Williams' film music, without the usual symphony orchestra, and includes 80 minutes of music.
