'Les Six' (so named in 1920 by critic Henri Collet) hit the classical music scene with almost the same outrageous force with which the punk movement slammed into popular music in the 1970s and early '80s. It consisted of a group of six composers working in France: Francis Poulenc, Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger, Georges Auric, Germaine Tailleferre and Louis Durey. Their music was largely a reaction against Impressionism and Wagnerism and incorporated the ideas of Satie and Cocteau with the popular styles of the time: French vaudeville, American jazz and café music.

To understand Bolling’s film music one must know his vast and multifaceted musical production. It ranges from purely jazz music to crossover music, with marvelous suites for various instruments and jazz piano trio, performed and recorded with some of the most famous performers (J.P. Rampal, A. Lagoyá, M. André, Yo Yo Ma, London Symphony Orchestra, etc.); from the 60s pop songs written for Brigitte Bardot and “Les Parisiennes” to over 100 soundtracks for movies, cartoons, documentaries.

Claude Bolling (born 1930) treads a fine line between the disciplines of jazz and classical music. Initially Bolling gained a reputation as a jazz pianist and a bandleader working in the tradition of Duke Ellington, but he also made a thorough investigation of classical technical resources through his study with composer Maurice Duruflé. In 1969 Bolling's dual interests bore fruit in the form of his Sonata for two pianists, which he played with Jean-Bernard Pommier. Through the balance of the 1970s Bolling continued to write highly popular and tasty jazz-styled Suites for various instrumental combinations, the most popular of which was the Suite for flute and jazz piano trio (1975) written for classical flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal. He went on to collaborate with other top classical musicians. Bolling is credited in some circles for helping spur on the concept of a classical musician applying his or her talents to jazz and other types of improvised music.

This collection on the U.K.'s Soul Brother imprint is a very compelling look at a big slice of Freddie Hubbard's long career as a leader, and one that gets ignored for the most part. Hubbard recorded over 20 records between Backlash, his Atlantic debut in 1966, and Ride Like the Wind for Elektra in 1982, with lengthy stops at Columbia and CTI (as well some straight hard bop and post-bop outings for labels Fantasy and Pablo). In many cases, some of these original recordings were not only disregarded by more traditional jazzheads, they were regarded with outright hostility. It didn't matter to Hubbard, however, because at the time, these were among his best-selling albums and connected with the public deeply.

After the death of Janáček in 1924, Martinů assumed the mantle of the leading Czech composer of the twentieth century. The chamber music on this disc abounds with the mosaic-like patterns, translucent lyricism and infectious rhythmic vitality which give his works their kaleidoscopic quality. From the highly original Sextet of 1929, with its jazzy Parisian character, to the Flute Sonata of 1945, in which the much-travelled composer imitates the song of the whippoorwill, an indigenous bird of New England, this disc surveys a quarter-century of Martinů’s prolific and always inventive output.

As an internationally successful pianist and composer, Erwin Schulhoff was one of the most important Czech artists in the first half of the 20th century. Over the last 25 years, his works have gradually enjoyed a renaissance, revealing him as a polystylist who was always ready to shun mainstream practices and absorb all the emerging compositional styles of his time. Examples of this musical diversity are now available for the first time in a 6-CD box of Schulhoff's works. From the early piano pieces and string quartets, to his symphonies and jazz improvisations, the collection shows how astutely he accommodated the different trends of his time.

Reissue with the latest remastering and the original cover artwork. Comes with a description written in Japanese. A sweet 70s set from the ultra-hip rhythm duo of bassist John Lee and drummer Gerry Brown – working here in a European setting with loads of great reed work to support the "bamboo" vibe of the title! Flute player Chris Hinze blows both bamboo and regular flute – and the feel of the set is like some of his excellent fusion dates from the same time – but the record also has lots of great work from Gary Bartz on alto and soprano sax, plus some keyboards from Hubert Eaves and Jasper Van'T Hof – two very different players who balance out the mood nicely. Some tracks are full-on fusion, but they're offset by mellower, more introspective passages – of the sort that really let the reed players come out strongly – and titles include "Jua", "Rise On", "Who Can See The Shadow Of The Moon", "Infinite Jones", and "Deliverance".
