This release from the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra's archive pays tribute to two iconic works from the French symphonic repertoire of the late 19th century: Cesar Franck's Symphony in D minor and Claude Debussy's Nocturnes. Franck's only symphony testifies to grandeur and French elegance, while Debussy's Nocturnes capture the special atmosphere of the night with all its twilight colors and movements. In the remastered concert recordings from 1991 and 1983, legendary conductor Sergiu Celibidache interprets the two masterpieces with all their drama and finesse.

The Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and its Music Director Gustavo Gimeno present a composer portrait of César Franck. The album features the famous Symphony in D Minor, as well as the lesser known, but equally enchanting Symphonic Variations for piano and orchestra, with Denis Kozhukhin as soloist. Born in Liege but raised in Paris, Franck synthesized Wagnerism with French musical traditions, resulting in a fine equilibrium between a voluptuous orchestral sound and audacious harmonies on the one hand, and lucidity and graceful charm on the other. While the three-movement symphony follows a from-darkness-to-light trajectory, the delightful Variations oscillate between symphonic poem and miniature piano concerto.

It’s good to see this disc back in print courtesy of Arkivmusic.com’s “on demand” program. Claus Peter Flor leads a sober, “Germanic” performance of Franck’s symphony, noteworthy for its clarity of texture and sensitivity to dynamic nuance. This is evident at both ends of the dynamic spectrum, whether in the delicate tracery of the second movement’s central section, or in the distinct audibility of the trumpets in their final lick just before the work’s closing chords. I do miss the rhythmic lift that Monteux brings to the finale (it’s not entirely free of Teutonic heaviness, but then that’s Franck’s fault too), and the Royal Philharmonic strings could have a sweeter timbre now and then, but this is a good performance, strong on basic musical values. The sonics are also well-balanced and pleasing.

Swedish composer Melcher Melchers (1882–1961) has been largely forgotten by music history. Melchers studied composition in Paris and his circle of friends included, among others, Matisse, Picasso, Modigliani, Guillaume Apollinaire, Erik Satie, and members of Les Six. Among the Nordic composers he had the biggest impact on the French music life but his aesthetics in music were quite conservative: d’Indy, Chausson and César Franck were his greatest influences.

Gathered here are two masterpieces of late 19th-century French orchestral music. Cesar Franck's Symphony in D minor (1888) is his only symphony. Drawing its lineage from later Beethoven and Schumann, it's very cohesive and its themes are quite distinct, remaining quite popular. Vincent d'Indy's Symphonie su un chant montagnard francais (1886) is a very efficient fusion of a symphony with a piano concerto. The themes are supple yet smoothly integrated into a three-movement tapestry that has also never seen its popularity fade. Many versions of these exist on disc, but Charles Dutoit seems to have a better feel than most.
