Frantz

The "French Suites" were devised as a technically less challenging preliminary level in learning the organ, situated between the studies of "Inventions and Sinfonias" and the "English Suites", the so called 'large' suites, and "Partitas". Bach's composing a remarkable number of pieces with a didictic purpose for the piano can be considered as an attempt to further his reputation as a teacher. Caspar Frantz combines his recording of the French Suites with two less known suites which demonstrate, that discoveries are still possible even in such a well-known ouevre like Bach's.

In una cittadina tedesca poco dopo la Prima guerra mondiale, Anna si reca tutti i giorni sulla tomba del fidanzato Frantz, ucciso in Francia. Un giorno Adrien, un misterioso ragazzo francese, porta dei fiori alla tomba e la sua presenza susciterà delle reazioni imprevedibili in un ambiente segnato dalla sconfitta tedesca.

Au lendemain de la guerre 14-18, dans une petite ville allemande, Anna se rend tous les jours sur la tombe de son fiancé, Frantz, mort sur le front en France. Mais ce jour-là, un jeune Français, Adrien, est venu se recueillir sur la tombe de son ami allemand. Cette présence à la suite de la défaite allemande va provoquer des réactions passionnelles dans la ville.

In 1919 Quedlinburg, Germany, a young woman named Anna is still mourning the death of her fiance, Frantz Hoffmeister, in the Great War while living with his equally devastated parents. One day, a mysterious Frenchman, Adrien Rivoire, comes to town both to pay his respects to Frantz's grave and to contact that soldier's parents. Although it is difficult for both sides with the bitterness of Germany's defeat, Adrian explains that he knew Frantz and gradually he wins Anna and the Hoffmeisters' hearts as he tries to connect with them. Unfortunately, Adrien and Anna discover the truth of his motives and things seem shattered for all. However, when Adrien leaves, Anna has her own struggles with the truth and her feelings until she sets out to find Adrien in France. With that, Anna has her own journey to make in more than one sense, even as they both realize that neither have easy answers to their complex personal conflicts with each other and the dead man linking them.
