The Pixies are associated with the 1990s alternative rock boom, and draw on elements including punk rock and surf rock. Their music is known for its dynamic "loud-quiet" shifts and song structures. Francis is the Pixies' primary songwriter; his often surreal lyrics cover offbeat subjects such as extraterrestrials, incest, and biblical violence. They achieved modest popularity in the US, but were more successful in Europe. Their jarring pop sound influenced acts such as Nirvana, Radiohead, the Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer. Their popularity grew in the years after their break-up, leading to sold-out world tours following their reunion in 2004.
This fascinating programme is a homage to the literary genius from Madrid, Miguel Cervantes, on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of his death.
As if singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles wasn’t busy enough co-creating her first-ever TV series, Little Voice, exclusive to Apple TV+, she also found time to create the soundtrack. Here, she performs 10 original songs that she composed for the inspiring, semi-autobiographical story, which follows an up-and-coming young singer named Bess as she tries to make a name for herself in New York. (The show is titled after Bareilles’ 2007 sophomore album, which contained “Love Song,” the breakthrough hit that put her on the map.) Years and several Grammys later—along with a litany of Broadway credits for writing, scoring, and performing on shows like Waitress and NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar—Bareilles sounds triumphant recounting the meandering path of her adolescence. And songs like “I Don’t Know Anything” and “Dear Hope” make it clear that an unwavering determination and optimism have guided her all the way.
Despite the increasing number of compilations of rare jazz recordings in recent years, there has been very little focus on West German jazz from the sixties. How come?
A lack of creative output during this era cannot be blamed. Especially in the sixties, when a new generation of jazz musicians emerged in Germany. This generation was stylistically open, somewhere between modern jazz and avant-garde with a unique European style of expression. Recordings from artists such as Wolfgang Dauner, Joachim Kühn and Albert Mangelsdorff were beginning to appear. These artists would, among others, later establish the world-wide reputation of German jazz musicians. The question "How come?" still remains…
The 'tablature of Jan of Lublin', as this significant collection is commonly known, belonged to the monastery of Canons Regular in the Polish city of Krasìnik near Lublin, and was bound in 1540. The owner and primary scribe was this Jan, or Johannes, of whom very little is known or can be surmised, but the contents of his book are a treasure trove of compositions and musical instruction illustrating what keyboardists of the region in the 16th century would have learned and played, including counterpoint, composition, organ-tuning, liturgical music and — perhaps richest of all — intabulations (arrangements) for keyboard of polyphonic vocal music from across Europe and original compositions for keyboard including 'preambula' (improvisatory preludes) and dances under the generic title 'corea' or with more specific names, several of them Polish.
