Rethinking a masterpiece. The Art of Fugue is both Johann Sebastian Bach’s opus summum and last complete work, presumably undertaken between 1740 and 1742. According to the frontispiece, the work’s original title actually read DIE KUNST DER FUGA, notably featuring the Latin (or Italian) word fuga rather than German Fuge - as found, instead, in the two printed editions of 1751 and 1752. Die Kunst der Fuga (KdF hereafter), in the form and the order presented in the Berlin Autograph, has all the appearance of a finished work featuring 14 fugues and canons, all based upon a single original theme, serving as the work’s foundation and with the individual pieces progressing in an increasing order of difficulty and contrapuntal perfection.

Sandro Fuga became a leading figure in Turin’s musical life in the mid-20th century. His passion for art and music was inherited from his eminent Venetian family which included grandfather Luigi Nono among its members. Few Italian composers of Fuga’s generation broached the sonata genre, but these three works represent the summit of his piano music, together forming a triptych of considerable significance. Fuga considered himself a "Romantic survivor", believing music to represent the expression of emotions. Thanks to his rejection of avantgarde ephemera and a profound faith in humanity, his piano sonatas are expressive, eloquent and emotionally compelling.

He studied piano under the guidance of Luigi Gallino; studied organ with Ulisse Matthey; and studied composition with Luigi Perrachio, Franco Alfano, and Giorgio Federico Ghedini. A cultured, elegant, and lovable artistic figure from a subalpine aristocratic background, Fuga was a refined and sensitive pianist, as well as a teacher of the highest caliber. He was a musician who made his own aesthetic belief and remained unscathed within the barrenness of the sterile shadows of a certain avantgarde, destined to grow old within l’espace d’un matin. Umberto Aleandri and Filippo Farinelli here are introducing us to the work including the three sonatas for cello and piano (two of which are world premiere recordings), clear emblem of the compositional ability of the author, teeming with pleasant and various writing solutions always elaborated with consummate skill and filtered by a great knowledge of the past tradition.

Arto Koskinen is a Finnish composer, pianist and harpsichordist who has devoted his musical life to establishing a dialogue between the Asian, European and Afro-American traditions. In the 1970s, he developed a passion for jazz, then went on to study Indian vocal music at a music and dance school in New Delhi. He also immersed himself in the study of polyphonic techniques from the Baroque era and sought to make them compatible with the melodic principles of oriental music. The result is this ‘Indian fugue’, composed between 1987 and 2000, whose main sources are North Indian classical music, traditional western polyphony and Afro-American improvisations. His compatriot Joonas Ahonen, a polymorphous pianist who has already recorded Le Monde selon George Antheil with Patricia Kopatchinskaja (ALPHA797), is a passionate advocate of Koskinen’s music. This monograph at last spotlights the music of a composer with a highly original voice.

Known for a cut-up production style similar to Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow, and Madlib, Fuga is further exploration into his style while wanting to try new things, including working with a backing band. "Electronic music with a huge amount of musicians? Put together by a respected turntablist? Is it possible? What's not possible? This is Fuga."

This record production represents for me a kind of “viaticum” towards the return to a complete musical activity, but it is also a farewell to Emilia Fadini, a great musician and musicologist specialized in the study and performance of late Renaissance, Baroque and Classical repertoire, with whom I had the privilege of studying for almost twenty years. The pieces in this recording are the last ones we faced together and I feel like to have to dedicate her this work. This is a way to remember someone who was a teacher, a friend, as well as a solid point of reference and an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me as well as for many musicians who, at least in Italy, are actually involved in ancient music.
