A serial killer named The Shark is terrorizing London by killing his victims with a speargun and then, dressed in a scruba-diver's wetsuit, using the city's sewer tunnels to make his getaway. Inspector Wade of Scotland Yard is assigned to the case, and he begins to suspect that the Shark is tied in with a smuggling ring the authorities believe is run out of a dive on the Thames waterfront called The Mekka.

Mermaids, fairies, pirates, Indians, wild beasts; family disputes, loss of children; nostalgia for looking back at one's past, etc. From reflections on eternal childhood to the most spectacular battles, may this opera – like James Matthew Barrie's tale – open up to all levels of reading.

This album is the last of my many recordings for Hyperion made using my own Fazioli F2781009 (every recording since October 2003, with just two exceptions for which I used other Faziolis). When the present recording sessions were over, the movers accidentally dropped it, and the piano came to an untimely end. The loss was devastating, as I loved it so much and it did everything I wanted it to do. May this recording be a testament to its huge range of colour that always served the music so well.

The great ‘Eroica’ variations are the centrepiece of an album which, ending with two amusingly anglophile tributes, contains some surprisingly under-appreciated Beethoven.
