It's 100 years since Nelson Mandela was born and 70 years since the official introduction of the Apartheid laws in South Africa. Director Dhivya-Kate Chetty tells her family's story, following her parents Radha and Maggie - a mixed, and once 'illegal' couple - on a trip from Glasgow back to South Africa. Stories of the past begin to unfold, with tales of resistance, protests, surveillance, an uncle in jail and a surprise connection with Mandela, in hiding.
Peter Donohoe - Stravinsky: Music for Piano Solo and Piano & Orchestra (2018)

Peter Donohoe’s compelling journey through the complete Prokofiev and subsequently the complete Scriabin Piano Sonatas for SOMM has led him almost irresistibly to the piano music of Stravinsky whose exuberance and many technical challenges he seems to relish. He begins with three movements from Petrushka for solo piano, drawn directly from the ballet by the composer ten years after the completion of the orchestral score. Stravinsky’s goal (together with the jazz-like Piano-Rag-Music) was to encourage pianist Arthur Rubinstein to play his music.

On their fifth full-length, Watching It All Fall Apart, Fruition transform pain and heartache into something truly glorious. With their songwriting sharper and more nuanced than ever before—and their sonic palette more daringly expansive—the Portland, Oregon-based band’s full-hearted intensity ultimately gives the album a transcendent power. “The songs are mostly breakup songs,” says Asebroek. “There was love and now it’s gone—we fucked it up, or some outside circumstance brought it to an end. It’s about dealing with all that but still having hope in your heart, even if you’re feeling a little lost and jaded.”

“The new album is complete fire – right in the moment.” - Gilles Peterson. Strut presents the brand new album from cosmic jazz travellers The Pyramids, led by saxophonist Idris Ackamoor, ’An Angel Fell’. “I wanted to use folklore, fantasy and drama as a warning bell,” explains Ackamoor. “The songs explore global themes that are important to me and to us all: the rise of catastrophic climate change and our lack of concern for our planet, loss of innocence and separation… but positive themes too, the healing power of music, collective action and the simple beauty of nature.”

Thin … still an "indispensable"! Yes, if you are passionate about jazz and you like drummers / composers who write music with their heart, you are at the right place. If E.J. Strickland has collaborated with such prominent jazz stars as Herbie Hancock, Cassandra Wilson, among others, or even Terence Blanchard, Wynton Marsalis and Ravi Coltrane, it's no coincidence. All appreciate the intelligence and grace of this musician's game. Moreover on this opus with the revealing title, "Warriors for Peace", the tone is given from the first title "Uvumilivu". The "warriors of peace" (translation of the title of this CD) send "the sauce" to scramble the tracks. In the background, there is a remarkable musicality, carried by Godwin Louis on the alto sax and Jure Pukl on the tenor and soprano saxophones, which could graze the wings of an angel on his cradle.

With hindsight, and a sense of history, Outcast is certainly one of Kreator’s most inventive and important albums. The German gargantuan-watt gladiators’ eighth studio release was different to anything they’d done in the past during a time when metal was in turmoil due to the grunge and Nu Metal explosions. The title Outcast was appropriate for how the band felt in the late 1990’s and when Outcast was released in July 1997 it wasn’t a huge selling album, nonetheless it proved they were still an exciting, individual and focused band.

It was on a Sunday, on September 19, 1993 to be exact, that Charlie Haden heard Brad Mehldau for the first time. Charlie and I were walking through the halls of the Hidden Valley Resort located in the Laurel Mountains in southwest Pennsylvania. The resort was sponsoring a jazz festival and Charlie had just finished an interview after which we needed to get back to the hotel room in order to prepare for Charlie’s sound-check and concert that night. As we hurried through the hall, one could hear, from behind the closed doors of the auditorium we passed, the sounds of a concert in progress.

Falling Edge (2013). An excellent debut record by this symphonic prog rock quartet out of Chatham-Kent, Ontario, Canada known as Falling Edge. Guitarist and vocalist Chris Rupert had put out a few solo records of acoustic and classical instrumental guitar pieces in the `80s and `90s. This is his foray into the progressive rock genre and the results are very impressive. Primarily symphonic in the writing department, one can also detect some space rock a la Eloy…
