Huge, bombastic synth pop—it's been done right? But Scotland's Chvrches have reached a higher plain, able to find new ways of adding fresh luster to their admittedly heard-it-before grand pop rumbles. Some of their appeal comes from Iain Cook, Martin Doherty and Lauren Mayberry's ability to write actual melodies with hooks as opposed to rhythms and washy synth riffs that might somehow become a cohesive song. As oxymoronic as it sounds, their brand of synth pop conveys real messages in its lyrics and despite all the digital wonders, manages to sound very human. Chvrches' superpower though lies with Mayberry, whose incandescent voice, assertive presence and nimble, intelligent lyrics are what separates the band from its legion of competitors. Mayberry sells these tracks in undeniably convincing ways. She is a star in the most expansive sense of that fraught term, another of the talented women whose brains and hearts are leading popular music today.

Merge continues its 20th anniversary festivities with a comp of non-label artists– Bright Eyes, Shins, New Pornos– covering songs from its catalog.
Merge Records doesn't look its age. Originally formed as an outlet for Superchunk material, the Durham, N.C.-based label has grown into an indie institution, but only gradually– year by year, release by release. It never allied itself with a scene or a sound, so the mind doesn't automatically tether it to a specific place or time, the way Sub Pop, despite its strong roster this decade, will be most closely associated with Seattle in the late 1980s and early 90s. So it's hard to believe Merge is already 20 years old, an occasion the label is marking with a big birthday bash– the five-day XX Merge fest in July– and a subscription-only series of commemorative retrospectives and remixes. Perhaps the most intriguing party favor is Score! Twenty Years of Merge Records: The Covers, a choppy but oddly endearing compilation that enlists 20 non-Merge acts to cover Merge songs.

One of the most notorious Australian pub rock bands, Cosmic Psychos play beer-fueled, garage-accented, heavy-hitting punk rock with no frills and no pretensions. Officially beginning their journey together in 1985, the Psychos gained a reputation for not caring about money so much as the free beer, laughs, and occasional overseas traveling involved with being in a rock band. Despite their lack of careerism, over the course of a career that's spanned four decades, the group released over a dozen albums, sang with Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, befriended Mudhoney, and supplied beer to the then-underage Silverchair at Australia's Big Day Out festival.
