J.B. Hutto – along with Hound Dog Taylor – was one of the last great slide guitar disciples of Elmore James to make it into the modern age. Hutto's huge voice, largely incomprehensible diction, and slash-and-burn playing was Chicago blues with a fierce, raw edge all its own. He entered the world of music back home in Augusta, GA, singing in the family-oriented group the Golden Crowns Gospel Singers. He came north to Chicago in the mid-'40s, teaching himself guitar and eventually landing his first paying job as a member of Johnny Ferguson & His Twisters.

There is only a slight difference between a street-corner blues singer and a sanctified street singer, since both need to hold a crowd and make a few bucks (no matter what they do with the money when the day is done), and as this four-disc collection of so-called guitar evangelists from the 1920s, '30s, and early '50s makes clear, playing slide for the Lord sounds pretty much like playing slide for the other side. If anything, the guitar preachers represented here might be even more out there and eccentric than their secular counterparts, making this box set a delightful addition to the standard country blues record collection. Blind Willie Johnson, the apex of the guitar evangelists, is well represented here with classic late-'20s tracks…

In the 1920s, as radio took over the pop music business, record companies were forced to leave their studios in major cities in search of new styles and markets. Ranging the mountains, prairies, rural villages, and urban ghettos of America, they discovered a wealth of unexpected talent. The recordings they made of all the ethnic groups of America democratized the nation and gave a voice to everyone.

Since Eric Bibb's breakthrough with the Opus 3 recording "Spirit & The Blues" in Autumn of 1994, a great deal has happened in Eric's life. In Spring of 1996 he was an outstanding success at the London Blues Festival (April) and later he was equally well received in Canada at the Vancouver Folk & BluesFestival (August). On both occasions the plaudits were shared by slide guitarist Göran Wennerbrandtwho, as well as playing on both of the CDs, also produced this release. On the new album we have in general the same musicians who contributed to the success of "Spirit & The Blues," including the gospel quartet The Deacons.

At first glance, the musical genres of gospel and blues have little in common, with one calling to mind spiritual joy and hope in a higher power and the other rooted in the secular world of pain that lacks a divine outlet. However, on closer inspection one soon realises that the blues and spirituals flowed from the same bedrock of experience, and that neither was an adequate interpretation of life without the other. As different as these genres may seem, they both share the expression of aching hearts and troubled minds. The blues are secular spirituals, or as T-Bone Walker put it, ‘The blues are just gospel turned inside out.’

Amazon Review by Stuart Jefferson: If you're a blues fan chances are you're already familiar with (if you don't already own) some/many/all of these albums. But if you don't own these sets (or have only a few) this is a good way to own all 20 albums in one nice, neat box. The sound is the same as the individual albums which is very good for the various periods when these tracks were originally recorded. The jackets are fairly thick cardboard and are reproductions of the original covers. The outer box is also of good quality. There's a 34 page booklet that has a few paragraphs on each disc, and track lists, but no detailed liner notes to really put this music into some kind of perspective, but information on these artists and styles is available in various blues books/encyclopedias and on the internet.

2007 CD two-fer featuring a double dose of Delaney on one disc! Formerly of the much-loved duo Delaney & Bonnie, Something Is Coming was Delaney Bramlett's first solo album, released, in 1972 featuring Gloria Jones, the future Mrs. Marc Bolan, on backing vocals. Mobius Strip followed in 1973, a far stronger album that features the stand out track "Are You A Beatle Or A Rolling Stone'.
