Hadley Caliman recorded a few albums in the 1970s, then didn't record as a leader for several decades until after retiring from his teaching job, then came a series of CDs issued by Origin, of which this is the third. This reunion with fellow tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb marks their first opportunity to play together since the mid-'60s, aside from one brief meeting in the 40-plus-year stretch leading up to this record date. Many two-tenor sax sessions end up being battles, but the two veterans are old friends who aren't trying to top one another and instead focus on inspiring each other's playing. The potent rhythm section includes pianist Bill Anschell, bassist Chuck Deardorf, and drummer John Bishop, all seasoned players who provide excellent support throughout the date. There's plenty of fire in the rousing workout of "Love for Sale." The very deliberate setting of "I Thought About You" features some of Caliman's most powerful solo work, while the two tenor men have a ball in the loping treatment of Freddie Hubbard's timeless jazz waltz "Up Jumped Spring." The bulk of the CD features strong original compositions. Caliman contributed the vibrant "Comencia," blending a slight Afro-Cuban flavor in a brisk bop vehicle, as well as the hypnotic "Gala," which proves to be the most dramatic performance of the session.

Third studio album from the ex-Spandau Ballet singer. Here Hadley loses the 80's synth pop sound and dives head first into swing where his powerful voice sounds as good as ever. A project close to his heart that he's been working on for some time and hopes that his choice of songs, and vocal and musical arrangements, will challenge the normal format of current swing and delight not only his existing fans, but also some new ones.

I am not an automatic fan of composer-led recordings, even when the composer is as great a conductor as Leonard Bernstein. However, after living with this newcomer for a while, I have to confess that it doesn’t quite match that classic version, even though it does a few things even better. On the plus side, there’s Kent Nagano’s swift and perky direction of some of the music-theater numbers, such as “God Said”, “World Without End”, and in general all of the music in and around the Gloria. But this can be a two-edged sword: The mechanized Credo has less impact than it could; a very quick tempo at the opening of the Agnus Dei prevents the chorus from ever sounding really angry and demanding; and the calamitous Dona Nobis Pacem simply lacks the bluesy sleaze that Bernstein himself wrings out of it. A slower tempo also would have allowed the music’s many layers to register with greater clarity.

Despite making a name for himself as a sideman with Della Reese, and in the orchestras of Bobby Bryant, Gerald Wilson, and Don Ellis, tenor saxophonist Hadley Caliman didn't cut this, his debut album as a leader, until he was 39 years old. (He cut less than ten in his lifetime.) His sidemen here include bassist Bill Douglas, drummer Clarence Becton, pianist Larry Vuckovich, and guitarist John White, Jr. Among the highlights is opener "Cigar Eddie," one of Caliman's four compositions (and one he would revisit throughout his lifetime).

For his first album as a leader in a couple of decades, Hadley Caliman returns with a bang. Though released by Seattle's Origin label, it's not strictly Northwest jazz, and though containing a couple of players from the California scenes, it's not strictly West Coast jazz. It's something different, tangible, with ties to the classics but explorations well into the new beyond. For someone who's played with everyone from Dexter Gordon to Santana, perhaps this shouldn't be surprising. The album opens with "Back for More," a new item from trumpeter Thomas Marriott with some nice parallel lines and a driving rhythm section.

Hadley Caliman (January 12, 1932 in Idabel Oklahoma – September 8, 2010) was an American bebop saxophone and flute player. After studying at Jefferson High School (Los Angeles) (the same school of fellow saxophonist Dexter Gordon) with trumpeter Art Farmer, Caliman performed or recorded with Carlos Santana, Joe Henderson, Earl Hines, Freddie Hubbard, Jon Hendricks, Earl Anderza, Patrice Rushen and several other jazz notables. In the late 1960s, he was briefly a member of a jazz-rock fusion group led by Ray Draper. He recorded his first solo album in 1971.

Reunion showcases a couple of old saxophone pros diving deep into the jazz mainstream, backed by an energized rhythm section. Tenor men Hadley Caliman and Pete Christlieb worked together on the Los Angeles Central Avenue jazz scene back in the 1960s, at a club called Marty's, where Caliman was the mentor. Forty-plus years later, they're back together again, on an absolute jewel of a straight-ahead offering.
