It’s an appropriate name for a Holober-led band; in many ways, Holober’s management of his many musical inspirations is a balancing act. On one hand, much of what he’s best known for is his work with larger ensembles like the WDR Big Band, the HR Big Band, and the Gotham Jazz Orchestra, whose latest work with Holober at the helm, Hiding Out, earned a 2020 GRAMMY® nomination. On the other, there’s the magnetism of even greater self-actualization, of writing for and leading a smaller group.

Blake Shaw is an upright/electric bassist, composer & arranger, bandleader and private lessons teacher originally from Lisbon, Iowa who now resides in Iowa City. Shaw studied with John Hall on double bass at the age of 17 with encouragement from his high school band director Roger DeYoung after becoming familiar with electric bass a few years before. He started his college career in the fall of 2008 at Kirkwood Community College and studied double bass with Jeanette Welch. He moved on to the University of Iowa to pursue a Bachelor’s of Music in classical double bass performance studying with professor Volkan Orhon and completing that degree in 2013.

This recording blends nicely the rhythms from pop jazz, with more traditional jazz elements. Excellent musicians that provide a recording that should be enjoyable for both fans of be-bop and pop music. Spanish Flower is a beautiful ballad and one of the highlights with an elegant bass solo by Eddie Gomez. Mr. Go includes a really enjoyable flute solo. Forever is another beautiful ballad, this time with a wonderful sax solo. W110th street is a nice rhythm full number that includes the entire set of musicians. – Rodolfo Romanach-suarez
