Recorded live at The Pershing Lounge, January 16 & 17, 1958. 24-bit digitally remastered.
On January 16 and 17, 1958 pianist Ahmad Jamal, bassist Israel Crosby and drummer Vernell Fournier shared their elegant, intimate and supremely well-crafted jazz with the audience at the Pershing Lounge inside Chicago's Pershing Hotel, a venerable institution located on East 64th Street, west of South Cottage Grove Avenue. Nearly half-a-century later, Gambit Records issued all 19 tracks from the Pershing engagements on one CD, bringing before the public a body of work that two generations of jazz heads had gathered piecemeal on Argo and Chess LPs or various partial CD reissues. Tacked on to this historical edition is an edited version of "Poinciana," released as a single after it became apparent that it had hit potential. A humorous moment occurred when the trio launched into a rapid rendition of "Music Music Music," a pop hit borrowed from perky Teresa Brewer. Ahmad Jamal transformed each familiar melody into a sculpted ritual of improvisation, conducted with brilliant precision and immaculate ease.

This compilation combines a live album by Peggy Lee from a 1968 engagement at the Copacabana that never was officially issued (though promotional copies were shipped) along with singles and unissued material that have never appeared on CD. Lee is confident throughout the live tracks (which also include studio re-creations with fake announcements and applause, due to audio problems with the live versions), singing a few standards but also several then-current pop songs, not all of which stand the test of time…

After months of research, the Lost Recordings collection was born. The remasterisation of these nuggets is entrusted to the Phoenix Mastering TM process, developed for several years by the engineers of Fondamenta and at the heart of which are Devialet technologies. This know-how makes it possible to reveal lost recordings, as if they had just been recorded. The concert of Dave Brubeck "Live at the Kurhaus 1967" is a totally new recording! 1967: In this last year of the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet, with Paul Desmond, Eugene Wright and Joe Morello, the four musicians perform at the prestigious Kurhaus Hotel in Scheveningen, the Netherlands.

This double recital, recorded on 9 November 1969 at the Berlin Philharmonic, takes place at a very special time in Sarah Vaughan's life. To everyone's astonishment, the small, awkward 45-year-old gave one of the most masterful stage performances of her career that could be captured on tape. In almost two hours she silenced all misgivings by proving how her approach to music remained eminently topical. Surrounded with an elegance as discreet as it is stimulating by a trio that is a master in the art of understatement, free of mannerisms, still as virtuosic as ever, developing her vocal technique to its highest degree throughout her incredible tessitura, between naturalness and sophistication, simplicity and refinement, Sarah Vaughan shakes things up. Sarah Vaughan resolutely favours sentimental melodies, making her warm, supple, suave and swinging voice the ultra-sensitive seismograph of the whole range of mixed feelings.

Wishbone Ash are noted for their extensive use of harmony twin lead guitars, which had been attracting electric blues bands since Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page had played together in the Yardbirds in 1966. Their contributions helped Andy Powell and Ted Turner to be voted "Two of the Ten Most Important Guitarists in Rock History" (Traffic magazine 1989). Melody Maker (1972) described Powell and Turner as "the most interesting two-guitar team since the days when Beck and Page graced The Yardbirds". Wishbone Ash formed when Martin Turner and Steve Upton set up auditions for a guitarist and subsequently ended up with two guitarists because they could not decide between the two. So as a result, guitarists/vocalists Andy Powell and Ted Turner completed the original Wishbone Ash line-up. This recording is from their January 19, 1974 show at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, New Jersey, shortly before Ted Turner left the band. Presented on 180 gram colored vinyl with a gatefold LP jacket.

Omar Dykes tears it up big-time on this marvelous live outing. Pulling tunes largely from his then-current Hard Times in the Land of Plenty album, Dykes and his band deliver the goods with loads of panache and attitude for a hometown crowd hanging on every note. Dykes' voice is poised somewhere between Howlin' Wolf and Bob Seger, while his guitar style is a Texas version of John Fogerty's work with Creedence, but the sound he produces out of all this is totally unique. The disc is loaded with solid Dykes originals like "Mississippi Hoo Doo Man," "Same Old Grind," "Hard Times in the Land of Plenty," and a wild encore performance of Jerry McCain's "Rock'n'Roll Ball." One great little package.
