In response to criticism that his ambitious, atmospheric music did not swing enough, Charles Mingus returned to the earthiest and oldest sources of black musical expression, namely the blues, gospel and old-time jazz from New Orleans. The LP Blues and Roots, recorded in 1959 and released in 1960, is still considered Mingus' most stirring work and has since become a milestone, perhaps the most soulful in his discography. Although this is a blues-oriented set, there is plenty of variety in tempos and grooves. The 1968 Quartet featured the leader/pianist, baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan, bassist Jack Six and drummer Alan Dawson. The repertoire on this LP ranges from “Limehouse Blues” (which is not really a blues) to “Things Ain’t What They Used to Be” and several originals.

The radical discovery by Amir Abdullah of 5 two-track master tapes in the care of Hermine Brooks ­– widow of innovative Detroit drummer Roy Brooks – of the Charles Mingus Quintet recorded live in Detroit at Strata Concert Gallery is cause for some serious celebration.

"Blues Full Circle" is the album from two-time Grammy nominee and multi Blues Music Award winning guitarist Duke Robillard, whose last album, "The Acoustic Blues & Roots of Duke Robillard", won Acoustic Album of the Year honors at the 37th Blues Music Awards in Memphis. Produced by Robillard and recorded at Lakewest Recording and Duke’s Mood Room, "Blues Full Circle" showcases his killer guitar tones in a small combo setting, which brings out the power and urgency of the songs.

The German saxophonist Denis Gäbel comes from a musical family, so it is no wonder that he began his musical journey at a young age. After taking his first musical steps with the cello and the piano, it wasn't long before he finally discovered the saxophone. At the age of 13, Denis won first prize at the national competition "Jugend jazzt" and it was during this time that he first discovered the music of Charles Mingus. "I had my first contact with the music of Mingus at the age of 13 at the JungendJazzWorkshop NRW. Since then I have been a passionate fan of his work. The first Mingus album I heard was his "Blues and Roots" and it is still my favourite album to this day," Denis explains.

Known for defying boundaries, "Oh Yeah" is a testament to Mingus’ unparalleled versatility. The commanding record delivers Mingus’ distinctive and unique approach to musical composition. His blues-tinged vocals are soaked with stellar piano playing. The album finds Mingus collaborating with an all-star cast of musicians including trombonist Jimmy Knepper, multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk and more.
