Harold and Maude is a cult classic film, featuring slapstick, dark humour, and existentialist drama, revolves around the exploits of a morbid young man – Harold (Bud Cort) – who drifts away from the life that his detached mother prescribes for him, as he develops a relationship with septuagenarian Maude (Ruth Gordon).

THE RELEASE OF LEGENDARY JAZZ PIANIST Harold Mabern’s new album Mabern Plays Mabern is the source of a mixture of pride and sorrow. Pride because Mabern’s 27th recording as a leader, culled from the same three January 2018 nights that generated his 26th, “The Iron Man: Live At Smoke,” documents the master pianist, then 81, in prime form, functioning as an inspired soloist, attentive accompanist, melodic interpreter, and crafty tunesmith. Sorrow because the release is posthumous — Harold Mabern died on September 17, 2019, at the age of 83.

Harold Mabern, Jr. (born March 20, 1936) is an American jazz pianist and composer, principally in the hard bop, post-bop, and soul jazz fields. He is described in The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings as "one of the great post-bop pianists". Mabern's piano style has been described as being "aggressive, very positive, crashing out chords that drop like pile drivers and warming up and down the keyboard with huge, whooping bursts of action", while, at the same time, he shows "a keen sensitivity" as "an extremely perceptive accompanist". Critic Gary Giddins has identified some of the characteristics of Mabern's playing as being "blues glisses, […] tremolos and dissonant block chords", that help to create a style "that marries McCoy Tyner's clustering modality with rippling asides that stem from [Art] Tatum". The influence of Phineas Newborn, Jr. remains noticeable: Mabern employs Newborn's "manner of playing fast lines in a two-handed octave (or two-octave) unison, and uses this device in wildly imaginative ways". When accompanying vocalists, Mabern states that he plays with "less force, less aggression. I use the soft pedal. You don't voice the chord with the leading tone. You wait for them to sing a phrase, then fill in the space."

Lakeshore Records is very excited to be releasing White Bird In A Blizzard Original Music by Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd. Robin Guthrie is a founding member of The Cocteau Twins; and Harold Budd, known for his unique and distinctive piano treatments, is a frequent collaborator of Guthrie. The two previously worked together on the Original Score to the film Mysterious Skin and others.

Harold’s going to need a miracle to get through this race in one piece… That’s where you come in! As the guardian angel-in-training assigned to watch over Harold as he competes in a series of increasingly complicated and dangerous obstacle courses, you must summon all your otherworldly might to get this hopeless contender across the finish line in first place.
