A four-hour compilation featuring big hits, key album tracks, cult classics and rarities from 1973. 1973 was another significant year in British pop, with the recent arrival of glam inspiring many underground bands to adopt a more streamlined sound. That more song-based approach helped give the 1973 singles chart a new energy, with memorable 45s from Mott The Hoople, Manfred Mann's Earthband, Faces, Status Quo, Medicine Head and Nazareth.

Genre: Rock | Label: Universal Music

Originally released as a four-song bonus EP with the U.K. edition of Armed Forces, then excerpted with an additional six songs on Rhino’s double-disc expansion of said album in 2002, Live at Hollywood High received a full-blown reissue in 2010, almost 32 years after the June 4, 1978 concert from Elvis Costello & the Attractions. As the second installment of the Costello Show archival series, Live at Hollywood High isn’t as legendary as Live at the El Mocambo, which had the benefit of once being one of Elvis Costello’s rarest records, but it’s a better show, or at least a better indication of the Attractions at their absolute peak.

Sweet-voiced singer/songwriter John Holt has been working professionally in the Jamaican music business since 1958, and his recorded legacy is a long one, with several peaks and valleys, but when he is on his game, and when he is working with a producer who cares about quality as well as commercial viability, he is arguably the greatest of Jamaica's balladeers. This two-disc, 50-track set from Trojan tells at least part of that story, beginning with Holt's wonderful work with the Paragons in the 1960s and continuing on through his subsequent solo career, which found Holt ranging from roots rock to string-drenched MOR fare and then transitioning effortlessly into the dancehall era.

Label: SuperBird (EU) | Cat.# SBIRD 0022 CD | Released: 2010-05-25 (1976/1977)

Cherry Red affiliate Superbird pairs Bar-Kays' first two albums for Mercury, the label to which the band defected after a long and productive run with Stax. Both recordings reached the Top Ten of Billboard's R&B albums chart. Too Hot to Stop, released in 1976, features the singles "Shake Your Rump to the Funk," "Too Hot to Stop," and "Spellbound," while Flying High on Your Love spawned "Let's Have Some Fun" and "Attitudes." Comparable to what their P-Funk brothers and sisters were releasing at the time, these are two of the band's most enjoyable albums, though they're not without a fair amount of filler. This is a straight-up two-for-one compilation with no bonus tracks.

Freddie Hubbard got a bad rap from jazz critics while at Columbia – most absolutely hated the music he made there because it indulged pop, soul, funk, and even disco abundantly. He got the last laugh, though. The critics were wrong. Great Britain's BGO offers proof in this two-disc set that contains Hubbard's first three Columbia albums from the mid-'70s: High Energy (1974), the provocatively titled Liquid Love (1975), and Windjammer (1976). Hubbard employed his own quintet on High Energy (something he couldn't do previously at CTI), which was comprised of Junior Cook, George Cables, Kent Brinkley, and Ralph Penland.
