At age 20, Charlie Sepulveda earned the first trumpet slot in the band of another native New Yorker of Puerto Rican ancestry, heralded pianist Eddie Palmieri. Twenty-five years later, after working with stars from Dizzy Gillespie to Tito Puente, Sepulveda has further proof that his studies at City College of New York, and in Puerto Rico, were fruitful. He started a solo recording career in 1991, but has only seven CDs, partly because he’s been busy giving back as a professor at the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico.

Although many people may not realize it, Puerto Rico is the home of a vibrant and thriving jazz scene. It is here that Latin Jazz trumpeter Charlie Sepúlveda lives and does the bulk of his playing but he is certainly no stranger to New York City. Born in the Bronx, Sepúlveda appeared regularly in the Big Apple throughout the 70s and 80s with his cousin - a Latin Jazz pianist of some notoriety named Eddie Palmieri - and the likes of Mongo Santamaria, Dave Valentin, Tito Puente and countless others.

Two frustrations determine the beginning of the journey that would settle on this record. First, Héctor Sepúlveda was not satisfied with the result of Fictions, the recent LP published by Vidrios Quebrados. It was barely twelve hours of recording with most of the tracks completed in one shot. The errors were evident and this went against the obsessive perfectionism of the guitarist. Second, the tenor of the songs. Hector would have preferred to include more rude subjects that more accurately represented his recent hallucination: Eric Clapton. One afternoon in late '67 with Eduardo Gatti in Viña del Mar, they listen to John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers, with Clapton on first guitar. The strength and drama of that guitar, its unpublished volume, changed the perspective of the leader of ‘Los Vidrios Quebrados’.
