Jazz / Cool / Jazz Piano Trio

Compared with other Mercury albums by Eddie Heywood, this album (his first album on EmArcy) sounds more “Jazzy”. Very relaxed, fancy and smooth piano trio recordings, although there are few “thrilling” moments. The Eddie Heywood Sextet was very popular in the mid-'40s, playing melodic and tightly arranged versions of swing standards. Heywood's father, Eddie Heywood, Sr., was a strong jazz pianist of the 1920s who often accompanied Butterbeans and Susie. He taught piano to his son, who played professionally when he was 14. Heywood Jr. performed with bands led by Wayman Carver (1932), Clarence Love (1934-1937), and, after moving to New York, Benny Carter (1939-1940).

Jazz / Cool / Jazz Piano Trio

An extremely talented pianist, Eddie Heywood’s arrangement of Cole Porter's ''Begin the Beguine'' made his sextet one of the most popular jazz groups of the 1940’s. He also wrote the standard “Canadian Sunset,” in the 1950’s to add to his impressive resume. Heywood received his first piano lessons from his father, also named Eddie, who was a well-known band leader in the 20s. Heywood joined his father, playing piano in the pit band at an Atlanta theatre. He also accompanied singers, including Bessie Smith, and thereafter worked in various small jazz groups, including those led by Wayman Carver, Benny Carter and Don Redman.

Thomas Heywood plays a program of organ transcriptions of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, with many popular Bach works that have not previously been heard as organ transcriptions. The featured organ is a 3-manual and pedal 1928-vintage Nicholson & Co. instrument (Worcester, England) which has most recently been updated and restored by Trevor G. Tipple of Worcester, located in the sanctuary of St Martin’s Church, Worcester.

Perfectly suited for the task of providing attractive and accessible music for public consumption, jazz pianist Eddie Heywood, Jr. occupies a comfortable stylistic plateau somewhere between the flashy Herman Chittison and the painterly Erroll Garner. Famous as an accompanist for Billie Holiday and leader of a widely acclaimed small group that recorded for the Commodore label during the early and mid-'40s, Heywood was forced by failing health to take a three-year hiatus from professional activity beginning in 1947. This fourth installment of his complete works in chronological order presents Heywood's comeback recordings, starting with four unaccompanied solos from 1950 and four 1951 piano studies with unidentified large-band accompaniment.

After spending a four-year period (1947-1951) recovering from partial paralysis of his hands, pianist Eddie Heywood made a comeback in the 1950s. Unlike in his earlier days, he emphasized easy listening music rather than jazz, preferring to play pretty melodies rather than to wander too far from the themes. On this out-of-print LP, Heywood performs a remake of "Canadian Sunset" in addition to 11 of his other originals. Half of the selections showcase his piano in front of an orchestra conducted by Sid Reman, while the other six numbers are played with a trio. Unfortunately, the personnel is unidentified but Heywood is the main star throughout anyway. Enjoyable and pretty music, even if nothing unexpected occurs.

Thomas Heywood plays a program of organ transcriptions and organ classics upon the Kotzschmar Memorial Organ at Merrill Auditorium, Portland City Hall, in Portland Maine. Internationally acclaimed organ virtuoso Thomas Heywood enjoys an outstanding reputation as one of the world’s finest concert organists. As the first and only Australian musician in history to live as a professional concert organist, Heywood is celebrated as “an acknowledged master” for his spoken introductions and truly unique ability to make the greatest music of all time come alive on the King of Instruments. He has an amazingly comprehensive repertoire of over 5,000 works. Not confined to the “organ world,” Heywood’s phenomenal success in reaching out to the vast concert-going public has made the critics boast that he “reincarnates Edwin H. Lemare,” the greatest concert organist of the twentieth century.

Australian organ virtuoso, Thomas Heywood, brings us a double historic find. The wonderfully-maintained 1873 Father Willis Organ at St Michael’s Church, Tenbury UK is essentially in the original tonal condition of 1873, and the same mechanical condition as it was when rebuilt in 1916. The music is from the catalog of organ works of The Rev. Frederick Scotson Clark (1840-1883). The CD is packaged with a 24-page full-color booklet, with lots of photos, essays on the composer, church and organ history, and samples of vintage scores.

This seven-CD collection exhaustively documents Columbia Records' first attempt at niche marketing with the Piano Moods series. Born out an impromptu marketing plan by a small Columbia Records staff in 1950, the Piano Moods series was hatched from the marketing discovery that there were more pianos than phonographs (that's record players for all you kids who don't remember vinyl LPs) in the homes of postwar America. The 12" LP had been launched a scant two years before and few titles were available. The Piano Moods series linked 20 albums of the same general type, all of them produced and sequenced by George Avakian, who had created the jazz and pop catalog on LP for Columbia beginning in 1948 – though they were originally released 33 rpm 10" discs to keep the folks with all those 10" 78 rpm discs happy when it came to storage. The sides were cut – usually – with no spirals (spaces) between tunes, giving the side a longer feel than its 17 minutes because the music was continuous. Most pianists preset their sequences and prepared introductions of the key of the preceding tune that modulated into the key of the next one.

If one was to interpret the whole output of EABS in general, an inquisitive listener would notice that each subsequent album stems from the previous one. The overtones are similar and they can be treated as variations on the same theme. The only thing that changes is the background of the story. It is all about life and death, the beginning and the end of the world, and the role of human beings entangled in all this existentially. Following the futurism lessons from Sun Ra, the band travels to the year 2061, continuing their mission in space in the company of a living legend, Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski.

Throughout these sessions, a window into Billie Holiday's creative process is provided by the inclusion of alternate takes. Many of them are rare, although all have previously been issued on one or another of the labels that have interacted with Commodore over the years. As alternates for records on other labels also reveal, once Billie conceptualized her approach to a song, she seldom varied the basic template. She seemed to decide the best way to organize the expressive gifts at her disposal and "photograph" in her mind a musical image of how she would do the number. Once that image was in place, subsequent versions for the most part differed only in matters of nuance or animation.
