The oddest thing on Tindersticks’ 12th album is its longest track, See My Girls. Stuart Staples, a mannered singer anyway, sounds as if he has been studying Ron Moody playing Fagin in Oliver! And the lyric he delivers in that sly and insinuating voice is set in an unspecified past, in which cameras and newsstands are still everyday things…

Together with Gerd Bauder (b) and Michael Pahlich (dr), he forms the Massoud Godemann Trio (MG3), which creates a striking and variegated sonic landscape. Disciplined and unbridled at the same time, they harness their momentum and unify supposed opposites into a collective sound which evokes lust for life in musical poetry. Fast-paced and charged or gentle and touching – it is constantly a trialogue and playful element with which MG3 tells tales from life: invigorating and stirring, flattering and even critical.

Tension in music often leads to some of the most rewarding recordings and performances – when there’s cross-talk around who should take the lead, when someone is pushing and someone else is pulling, when the band isn’t resting in the beat but subjugating it. Duke Ellington’s great 1962 trio recording, Money Jungle, featuring Max Roach and Charles Mingus, was famously tense. You can hear it in the way Roach and Mingus are constantly snapping at each other, but their respect for Ellington takes precedence and leads to one of the finest trio records ever made.

Tindersticks have announced news of their new studio album, 'No Treasure But Hope', which will be released November 15th via City Slang. Three years since their last album proper, singer Stuart Staples decided Tindersticks’ return called for something special. “I felt we needed to be able to make something meaningful,” he says. No Tindersticks album has lacked meaning, of course, but these mavens of intimate, expansive mood song dig deep and diversify beautifully on No Treasure but Hope.
