The appetite for evolving performance practices in Bach’s St Matthew Passion appears undiminished as we have gradually shifted, over the generations, from larger to smaller ensembles and also towards a greater dramatic understanding of the implications of Bach’s ambitious ‘stereophonic’ double choir and orchestra choreography. René Jacobs has never been shy of a new hunch and taking it as far as (and sometimes beyond) what is either reasonable or defining.

Bach and Pymalion: history of a passion; and the exploration of inner drama associated with the brilliant cantor, as well as the constant refinement of the art of singing. A milestone in this 15-year relationship is the new recording of the St. Matthew Passion with Raphael Pichon at the helm of an extraordinary ensemble of singers and musicians, convincing in the precision and seriousness of the accomplished work. This reading is about a tragedy at once intimate and theatrical, human and metaphysical, in five acts.

As part of the first generation of indie-rockers Human Switchboard were transplants from Ohio that found their way into the NYC club scene of the early 1980s. Inspired by the writing of the Velvet Underground Bob Pfeifer, Myrna Marcarian and Ron Metz along with an endless slew of bass players worked up a great batch of edgy post punk rockers with battling boy/girl vocals before imploding. This collection documents the Human Switchboards integral contribution to the history of alternative music. "Most music writers seemed incapable of discussing Human Switchboard without mentioning the Velvet Underground, and there's no getting around the fact Rob Pfeifer's melodic style and clipped vocal delivery bears a certain resemblance to what Lou Reed was doing back in his formative days. But there's an emotional tension and sexual paranoia in Pfeifer's work that sets him decidedly apart from the Velvets and their many followers, and songs like "This Town" and "Refrigerator Door" speak of a grim, landlocked existence that would likely not have occurred to anyone outside of the Midwest." –Muze

It’s been 43 years since the release of The Selecter’s seminal debut album Too Much Pressure and while it still inspires and resonates today, their new studio album Human Algebra keeps the fire burning with a stellar collection of hard-hitting tracks in the band’s own inimitable style. Human Algebra, released April 21st, is a word from the wise – from questioning ‘fake news’ (“Big Little Lies”), to pointing the finger at keyboard warriors (“Armchair Guevara”), and the scourge of knife crime (“Human Algebra”). Human relationships are also touched upon (“Boxing Clever”), along with a touching tribute to the late great Ranking Roger from The Beat (“Parade The Crown”).
