Humble Pie, known as boogie hammerheads, at least once achieved American popularity in the mid-'70s. Its origins were quite different, however, and its debut album, As Safe as Yesterday Is, is a visionary blend of hard blues, crushing rock, pastoral folk, and post-mod pop. It would be even more impressive if the group had written songs to support its sound, but it seemed to have overlooked that element of the equation.

Recorded while Peter Frampton was still in the band, Performance: Rockin' the Fillmore captures an early performance by Humble Pie where Steve Marriot's lyricism and ideas where balanced by Frampton's searing lead guitar. This is hardly as engaging as As Safe Yesterday Is, which had studiocraft along with songcraft, but as a document of a band at a pivotal point in their existence, this is valuable and at times insightful.

Things finally clicked with the band's fifth studio album, Smokin'. It became the band's best-selling album, with chart peaks of #6 in the US and #28 in the UK. The album contained "30 Days in the Hole" which became one the band's best known songs. The album marked Marriot's emergence as the band's primary creative force, including being the album's producer. 24bit Remaster 2007

Humble Pie - Town And Country (1969) [Reissue 2008] Music

The band's second studio release, Town and Country came just three months after their debut album. The album was assembled hurriedly, with all of the band's members sharing songwriter duties. It had a much softer sound than the first album, with a mix of ballads, blues, folk and country rock. The album failed to chart in the UK or US.
