Everything But The Girl was formed in 1982 by singer-songwriter-musicians Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt. Acclaimed for their tender-tough lyrics, Thorn's unique voice and Watt's arrangements, they released a string of UK gold albums throughout the 1980s experimenting with jazz, guitar pop, orchestral wall-of-sound and drum-machine soul, through to the 90's, ending on 'Temperamental', where the duo chose to quit on a high. Tracey focused on family life away from the spotlight before returning with a run of solo albums and best-selling autobiographical books. Ben moved into DJing and remixing, and launched the respected electronic label, Buzzin' Fly. He returned to his singer-songwriter roots with a trilogy of solo albums from 2014-2020. In November 2022 Everything But The Girl announced they had recorded a new studio album - the first for over two decades, released in 2023.

Originating at the turn of the 1980s as a leader of the lite-jazz movement, Everything but the Girl became an unlikely success story more than a decade later, emerging at the vanguard of the fusion between pop and electronica. Founded in 1982 by Hull University students Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt, the duo took their name from a sign placed in the window of a local furniture shop, which claimed "for your bedroom needs, we sell everything but the girl." At the time of their formation, both vocalist Thorn and songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Watt were already signed independently to the Cherry Red label; Thorn was a member of the sublime Marine Girls, while Watt had issued several solo singles and also collaborated with Robert Wyatt.

Culling material from Everything But the Girl's first ten years as a band (from the Eden/Everything But the Girl stage through Amplified Heart), The Works is a three-disc, 58-song (well, 55 plus three remixes) that thoroughly recaps everything the group based itself on. The Works expands upon Home Movies, pretty much overlapping the latter's selection and then building upon it, and also including ten songs from Amplified Heart, which Home Movies ignores. For any EBTG fan who already has the group's albums, this compilation doesn't really offer much in new material, but it's a great way to catch up on what they were without having to commit to nine full-lengths.

Everything but the Girl (sometimes described as EBTG) were an English musical duo, formed in Hull in 1982, consisting of lead singer and occasional guitarist Tracey Thorn and guitarist, keyboardist, producer and singer Ben Watt. Everything But The Girl have received eight gold, and two platinum album BPI Certifications in the UK, and one gold album RIAA Certification in the US. They had four top ten singles and twelve top forty singles in the UK. Their biggest hit song "Missing" charted high in several countries and reached number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1995.

Adapt or Die: Ten Years of Remixes Review by Andy Kellman
Adapt or Die: Ten Years of Remixes is a half-accurate title for this discerning compilation of Everything but the Girl's commissioned mixes. It actually entails 15 years of remixes, spanning from the dawn of the '90s through 2004. (To be fair, the four remixes performed since 1999 were done specifically for this set.) "Adapt or Die" is, however, an ideal way to indicate the duo's approach to remaining relevant to club music for such an extended period of time. These tracks also show that keeping up with trends in dance doesn't always have to be at the expense of timelessness.

Eden is the debut studio album by British musical duo Everything but the Girl. It was released on 4 June 1984 by Blanco y Negro Records. The album contains the single "Each and Every One", which peaked at number 28 on the UK Singles Chart. The cover design was by lead singer Tracey Thorn's former colleague in the Marine Girls, Jane Fox. By 2012, Eden had sold around 500,000 copies. Eden was reissued in 2012 as a remastered edition by Edsel Records.
