Though June Christy performed well in many different settings, she excelled when leading a small group or singing a sympathetic chart. Though in 1945 she was still a decade away from a dedicated solo career that saw her shine with Pete Rugolo's advanced arrangements, Christy began recording laid-back transcription dates with small groups of Stan Kenton sidemen. The Jazz Factory's collection of this material, "Complete Capitol Small Group Transcriptions", trumps earlier collections like "The Uncollected June Christy with the Kentones" (1946) by offering 25 small-group titles from late 1945 and 1946, all recorded with a talented group of Kenton's players including Bob Cooper, Kai Winding, Shelly Manne, and Ray Wetzel, plus guitarist Dave Barbour.

The National's eighth record came from prosaic beginnings. Director Mike Mills – not to be confused with the bassist from R.E.M., as he so often is – invited Matt Berninger to collaborate, a notion that quickly spawned two projects: a short film from Mills and a new album from the National, both entitled I Am Easy to Find. The storytelling style solidified on that excellent album opened the floodgates for subsequent volumes of seemingly unedited semi-poetic ruminations underscored by repetitive grooves that often felt secondary. I Also Want to Die in New Orleans isn't the most dense of Kozelek's diary-like statements (its 89-minute running time brief by comparison to 2017's synth-heavy, hours-long Common as Light and Love Are Red Valleys of Blood) but it's a demanding listen nonetheless.
