40 years on and, for good or ill, the Sex Pistols remain the band that we think of first when we think of the 70s punk revolution that continues to resonate. There isn’t much they can do about that. History has spoken. They were the band largely responsible for kicking against the established rock order and establishing a new attitude and DIY aesthetic. Although they would quite naturally baulk at the idea of being called a ‘punk’ outfit, it does on a certain level appear very timely that we’re celebrating the 40th Anniversary of punk this summer with this fantastic live collection.

Having reunited for 1976's The Best of Two Worlds, saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian singer/guitarist João Gilberto celebrated the album's release with a week of shows at San Francisco's Keystone Corner. Marking over a decade since the pair had made history with 1964's landmark Getz/Gilberto album, the shows, which took place between May 11-16, 1976, would prove one of the rare times they appeared live together. Resonance Records' 2016 album, Getz/Gilberto '76 (and the separate release Moments in Time), documents these shows via live recordings made by Keystone Korner club owner Todd Barkan.

This is the second volume in the Doric String Quartet’s series devoted to Haydn’s String Quartets. Op. 76 turned out to be the last full set of six string quartets that Haydn was to compose. While they were written over the period 1796-97, they were not published until 1799. They had been commissioned by Count Joseph Erdödy, and such arrangements often entailed, as in this case, a period of time during which the works were reserved for that person’s exclusive use and enjoyment. The composition of Op. 76 coincided with Haydn’s work on Die Schöpfung and the first few of the six masses which Haydn wrote for the name day of Princess Maria Hermenegild Esterházy, and one can readily imagine that such compositional preoccupations rubbed off onto the composition of the quartets. However, that cannot be equated with a particular predominant ‘opus character’, a feature of some of Haydn’s previous sets. Rather – like Op. 20, also recently recorded by the Doric String Quartet (CHAN10831(2)) – the quartets seem to be most remarkable for their sheer variety.

Gato Barbieri live at Paul's Mall, Boston in 1976. Gato Barbieri left his native Argentina for Europe in 1962. By the end of the decade he was based in America, and established as one of the world's leading jazz-fusion saxophonists and composers. Best-known for his classic score for Last Tango In Paris (1972), he also recorded many albums, finding his greatest success with Caliente! in 1976. The superb performance here was broadcast on WBCN-FM that October, and finds him at the peak of his powers. It's presented here together with background notes and images.
