Ian Makellen

Ian Wheeler was one of Trad Jazz's outstanding clarinet players yet remains something of an unsung hero. He first came to public notice as a member of Ken Colyer's Jazzmen which he joined in 1955 replacing Acker Bilk. This was what was known as Colyer's "Classic line-up". He had already developed a distinctive sound and superb inventiveness. He left Colyer to briefly form the Sims-Wheeler Vintage Jazz Band with trumpeter Ken Sims before being asked to join Chris Barber's band to replace the legendary Monty Sunshine. He was with Barber for 27 years. He took a brief break in the middle to co-lead Hefty Jazz with Keith Smith. This double-for-the-price-of-one compilation includes tracks with the various bands he played in plus a few projects he undertook. The musicians include Ken Colyer, Chris Barber, Rod Mason, Acker Bilk, Sammy Rimington and Dick Wellstood. Many of the tracks are previously unissued.

A composer inextricably linked with London’s Covent Garden, Thomas Arne’s greatest opera, Artaxerxes, was premièred at the Theatre Royal, the predecessor of the Royal Opera House, on 2 February 1762 and remained in the Covent Garden repertory until the late 1830s, where it received a documented 111 performances before 1790. The young Mozart almost certainly attended a performance when he came to London in the mid1760s and Haydn was also acquainted with the work, enthusiastically exclaiming that he “had no idea we had such an opera in the English language.”

Ian Dury, like Ray Davies and Paul Weller was a very English talent. The colorful, metropolis-inhabiting characters like Billericay Dickie or Plaistow Patricia he sung about, and the ever so cockney music hall accent he chose to sing in, were a big part of that. But mostly, it was the detailed, poetic way he cataloged English life and the melting pot of musical styles he used to do so, from punk and funk to jazz and rock'n'roll, which left no doubt that Dury's work could only come from one place: The very heart of England. So few were surprised when after his death Sir Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams, Madness and more all lined up to pay their respects with cover versions of some of his best loved songs. You'll find plenty of them here, in their original versions, culled from his entire career from the mid-'70s with pub rockers Kilburn & the High Roads through the golden years with the majestic Blockheads right up to the last studio recordings at the start of the '90s. 2 CD set is comprised of 34 tracks. The documentary about the life and career of renown fashion editor André Leon Talley was an official selection of the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, where it made its world premiere. The soundtrack will be released digitally on May 25th, in culmination with the film’s theatrical release.

The Mozartists continue their MOZART 250 project of staging operas by Mozart and his contemporaries with their recording of the UK premiére of Niccolò Jommelli’s Il Vologeso, first performed over 250 years ago on 11 February 1766 for the Stuttgart court in Ludwigsburg.
