Two classic recordings by Karajan while he was in London as the imposed guest of Walter Legge, director of the Philharmonia Orchestra. The two symphonies form a lavish but unusual combination – Symphony no.2, the most popular of the seven created the composer of Valse Triste, and his curious Symphony no.4, a violent, arid, anti- Malherian dissertation infused with doubt and melancholy due to its baleful (augmented fourth) tritone interval, the hitherto spurned diabolus in musica. Two paradoxal masterworks.

The events of Beethoven's life are the stuff of Romantic legend, evoking images of the solitary creator shaking his fist at Fate and finally overcoming it through a supreme effort of creative will. His compositions, which frequently pushed the boundaries of tradition and startled audiences with their originality and power, are considered by many to be the foundation of 19th century musical principals. Born in the small German city of Bonn on or around December 16, 1770, he received his early training from his father and other local musicians. As a teenager, he earned some money as an assistant to his teacher, Christian Gottlob Neefe, then was granted half of his father's salary as court musician from the Electorate of Cologne in order to care for his two younger brothers as his father gave in to alcoholism. Beethoven played viola in various orchestras, becoming friends with other players such as Antoine Reicha, Nikolaus Simrock, and Franz Ries, and began taking on composition commissions.

When Sibelius conducted the premiere of his Second Symphony in Helsinki on 8 March 1902, it was warmly received as a Finnish nationalist’s cri de cœur while his homeland struggled under Russia’s increasingly repressive yoke. Sibelius objected to such an interpretation of the Symphony, preferring that the work be regarded purely as a symphonic construct. Yet Sibelius’s Second seems to have had an ‘extra-musical’ narrative after all – only not the one of national aspiration long foisted on it. Sibelius’s first concrete idea to become at least part of the Symphony struck him while he was in Italy, with his family, between February and April 1901. While in Rapallo, Sibelius began to fancy that the villa they were staying in was Don Juan’s (the anti-hero he had first encountered through Mozart’s famous opera Don Giovanni). In his diary he wrote a scenario from the anti-hero’s perspective: ‘I was sitting in the dark in my castle when a stranger entered. I asked who he could be again and again – but there was no answer. I tried to make him laugh but he remained silent. At last, the stranger began to sing – then Don Juan knew who it was. It was death.’
