WELCOME TO ILYA EFIMOV CONTRABASS BALALAIKA ! This instrument has a special place in the balalaika family. The largest in size, Contrabass produces the lowest, most powerful dynamics and sound - equivalent to an upright bass. As with all balalaikas, It has three strings, tuned E-A-D. Main Range: E (bass-octave)-A (treble octave). The notation in the bass clef is written an octave higher than its actual sound. The contrabass balalaika is played with a large leather pick, creating a softer, thicker, clearer sound. The technique for playing the contrabass balalaika has been developed and perfected in recent times; with solo performances attracting wide attention among artists as well as teachers and students.

The relationship between Igor Stravinsky and the violin didn't get off to a promising start: early on in his career the composer stated that he was not fond of stringed instruments, finding them ‘rich in cheap expressivity’. He was also suspicious of virtuoso interpreters – among which violinists were particularly numerous – and their tendency to ‘seek immediate triumphs and to lend themselves to the wishes of the public’. Nevertheless there are in Stravinsky's oeuvre a number of works featuring a solo violin, all of which have now been recorded by his compatriot Ilya Gringolts.

Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst was in his day considered by no less an authority than Joseph Joachim to be the greatest living violinist, although he is now almost forgotten. He was compared favourably with Paganini, whose style he emulated and with whom he played in concert, and for most of his adult life gave concerts all over Europe, playing his own and other virtuoso concertos and chamber music. The award-winning soloist on this recording, Ilya Grubert, plays a 1740 Guarnieri violin once owned by Henryk Wieniawski.
